I had a lot to do this weekend but got out three times for short hunts on this field. Found lots of musket balls, buttons, coins from the late 1800's to early 1900s, mostly average finds. I have hunted this field so many times and it always gives up some nice relics and today was exceptional.

Found this 1743 gold coin, my second gold coin find and I think this is the first gold keeper since the last gold coin 6 years ago, LOL. I thought it was a piece of foil when I saw it, LOL. Not sure where it is from just yet but I have seen them before. I was literally on my last run on the field close to the end. It's a little bent and scratched but here it is. The obverse.

Reverse. There is a Goldsmith in my town, if it is reasonable I will have him straighten it, he has done work for me in the past and he is reasonable.

Also found this 1893 Chicago World's Exposition souvenir medallion of Christopher Columbus, another very cool find as I have a silver half dollar commemorating the 1893 Chicago Expo. If you get bored, read up on the 1893 Chicago Expo, you will see some familiar names, cool history! Here's the obverse of the medallion.

Re: Gold coin and Christopher Columbus...

Finding a gold coin is the holy grail of metal detecting! Congrats on this being your second. I'm also impressed (jealous) with the size of that field you're hunting, since here on Long Island, fields of that size are far and few between.

Re: Gold coin and Christopher Columbus...

Truely a field of dreams. Nice work.

Re: Gold coin and Christopher Columbus...

Obvious congrats on the Banner Gold. Exceptional.

If you enjoy history on the Chicago worlds fair, you might find the book "Devil in the White City" of interest. It's a fictional novel, but extremely period and data correct. It's amazing just how many items took flight from that event. A good read.

And that 1893 half you speak of was my first collectable coin. My great grandmother gave one to me. It could be said, it was her fault for my obsession of hunting and collecting.

As always, a pleasure reading your posts.
Regards,
Jules

Thanks all for the great comments and banner nomination, it really was a great find! Here's the update...

I had the gold coin straightened at the Goldsmiths in town, thought it would take a few days but he did it on the spot. Not something you want to watch, LOL! Didn't help the coin much but it is straight. He remembered me from when I had some gold melted down and had him make my wife a ring and a pair of earrings, he didn't charge me for the straightening and I did try to pay him. To make it even better, he gave me a bag of American coinage, dollar coins, halves, nickels, dimes, quarters, pennies and a few wheats as well. I made about $10.00 letting him straighten the coin, LOL. I insisted he keep the silver coins as there were several, a 1961 Rosie slipped by. After straightening, Obverse.

Reverse. The Goldsmith wants to go detecting with me some day just for the experience, told him he can use my Ace 250. By chance, a lady I know came into the shop, her newer house is built over a small palace from the 1500s, some of the palace walls are built into her basement. I asked if I could detect her yard and told her she can keep everything we find so Saturday I will probably detect her yard.

Here's the coins he gave me, I tried to give him face value but he wasn't interested in the cash. HH, Mike
