Thomas J Beale, a born freeman of color, served with the CSA RICHMOND HOWITZERS, a total black Confederate unit, as opposed to many Union colored army divisions that were commanded by a white officer.
After the War, Beale became the Alderman of the newly formed Jackson Ward in Richmond.

I thought that I had commented on this thread , IMHO I can see why & why not Black's would join the Confederacy.

Suppose one would have to live that particular persons life experience to truly know 'Why".

I'd better read the comments before saying more , if I do.

Lots of black men served in the Confederate Army and your regular Confederate infantryman was the equal of today's Special Forces soldier. It has been shown that Confederate troops were 20% more effective in combat than their Yankee counterpart. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, then please pass the grits, thank you.

I was watching one of those "man on the street" type of interviews regarding history. The young people who were asked couldn't place the decade Abraham Lincoln was president, they couldn't name who we fought in the Revolutionary War and didn't know who we fought in WWII.

Were they freshmen congressmen and women?

It amazes me the show Jeopardy these days , even tho one guy is winning big at this time.
