Go South Young Man - NEW PHOTOS Just Posted - Rev & Civil War Relics?

Anyone living in the extreme northern states knows that come winter you need to pack-up and head south if you want to do THing.

This works out rather nice for us because most of our children live in the south. It seems that's the only place they can find work these days. Right now Michigan is not the place to come for a job unless you specialize in something pretty awesome.

Anyway--here's a few dug goodies from some skirmish sites in South Carolina.

I wonder what the button is?

The coins are your typical Brit fare you almost always find at Rev. or Civil War battle sites. One coin looks like it was hit by a bullet. You can't tell by the picture but it has this big round dent.

The bottom picture is an enlarged photo of the button at the top of the first picture. I just now brushed it with a tooth brush and soap. The front of the button has no detail that I can see. It's just rounded.

Re: Go South Young Man (and not so young) Rev & Civil War Relics

Nice Badger, Cool to have kids in the warmer states. The one coin looks like a king george. They are really worn down though and hard to tell. The button is old to. It's nice just to be digging this time of year. I just bundle up as long as the ground is soft I'm out. I rarely ever site a winter out unless it's below 20 out.

Your coins remind me of the time my grandfather was over. He sat there looking at the furnace and told my ma the tv reception wasn't worth a damn. ;)

We also have lots of other stuff and maybe I'll post some more later. I've got a lot of flat buttons and many still show the gilding.

I like the south in the winter but man you can have it come summer. Michigan is super in the summer months--a pain in the winter.

I've been thinking about moving south mainly for THing reasons. Man, if I could be there year around I'd kill the relics.

You folks who live in the Colonial/War areas got it made. Just do your research.

Same was true of my dad. Poor fellow. People would come to me and say "you've got to do something about your dad driving! He'd like ta killed me today! Finally we convinced him to hang it up.

As for relics, we also found lots of broken pottery.

Question: How did broken china pottery end up at battle sites?

Nice way to escape to detecting, LOL! The last pic, on the right looks like a musketball with a black glass looking center, I also found one here in Germany, I thought it might be an eye for a doll, any idea what it is? HH, Mike

More than likely they were from the camp followers, the soldiers families who followed them. And then you had ?times when the towns elite would gather on a hillside and watch over the battlegrounds while sipping their tea.......When some of the wealthy went to war, their wives even sent their best china with them, so they didnt have to eat like commoners........I am assuming that didnt last long........

Mine has a hole through it. It's dark and looks like glass.

I don't know what these are but there are tons of them there whatever they are. I have them all sizes from about 38 cal size on up to about nickel size.

In the south I'm in the dark because I don't really know this War stuff. I do know it's a blast to dig. But you'd better have a deep seeking detector.

WOW! Thanks for the info gypsy!

This also explains why the broken china is usually so ornate. Some of that stuff was obviously very expensive in it's day.

Re: Go South Young Man - PHOTOS - Rev & Civil War Relics?

I believe most of the china and other stuff was looted. Soldiers ate off it and tossed it. After all this was a war.

Re: Go South Young Man - PHOTOS - Rev & Civil War Relics?

I would agree , going down south is always nice if your hunting all the time and retired...But when you have to work or run a business it's kind of hard to do...But here in the northeast it's been great I have been out detecting just about every week with no snow or bruital cold temps...it has been mild and the find have been coming out of the ground...But last night we finaly got that blast of snow 12 inches ... So its time to do research , so when we get the melt down will be ready....
The finds are nice you have there ,I believe the large coin looks like a 1786 Connecticut copper the bust is facing to the left I believe... Well good luck on your next outing and keep on posting.....Thanks ;D
