Ah...net floats, those bring back memories!I used to work on a beach in Calif, and one week those floats washed up,it was crazy! We would go up the beach and pick them up as we went then turn around and pick more up as they washed in.We got some that were shaped like rolling pins, round ones from the size of oranges to the size of basket balls!!!

They could be old-time targets for trap/skeet shooting--before the current type of clay pigeon was developed, they used to use glass balls. If that is what they are, my guess is that they are fairly old and pretty rare, being unused.

Mojjax...I agree with all of the above on them being old net floats.....they look old and handmade and are collectors items and some are very valuable!! Sweet find, Congrats!!

Ray's Idea about trap shooting targets sounds intriguing , but SWR float idea sounds more likely (they were found just a few miles from the coast) Thanks!

I got obsessed with fishing floats after a trip to Hawaii where I bought one at a flea market in Maui for 10 bucks. It has a Japanese character pressed into the part where the glassblower sealed it off.

I have a book on float collecting. It says that glassblowers in Japan would occasionally blow smoke into a float before sealing it. Collectors have reported breaking floats that have washed up on the beach, and seeing smoke come out.

My favorites are the ones with the heavy rope netting still attached. There are lots of fake ones out there. Real ones tend to be heavy, seamless, and patinated.

An old western ballad, "Big Ball's In Cow Town",..... let's all go down. I never could figure out just what that meant, and I guess I never really wanted to either.Bob Wills wrote it, a local country and swing band. Monty
