Yep… although it’s not completely clear if it was the girl or her father who actually retrieved the sword (although the young girl was the first to see it). However, the lake (Dozmary Pool) has no historical connection to the Arthurian legends. First mention of it in the context of Arthur was pure invention by the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson in his 1869 “Idylls of the King, The Passing of Arthur”.

Before that, although there are other folklore legends associated with the lake, there had been no mention of Arthur at all. Cyrus Redding described it in 1842 for the benefit of 'sightseers' (with no mention of Arthur): “No scene can be imagined more horribly dreary… it is a contemptible lake, not being more than a mile in circumference… The cheerless aspect of the spot accounts for the stories which the country people have invented...” and that’s probably why Tennyson chose it to invent the association.

One legend, of a “Faustian” nature is that the 17th Century Cornish magistrate Jan Tregeagle sold his soul to the devil in return for power, fame and success but was then doomed to repeat pointless and impossible tasks. One of the tasks was to empty Dozmary Pool by scooping out the water with a limpet shell that had a hole in it.

I do love a bit of folklore... whether substantiated or not.

I can just imagine the excitement that little girl felt when she retrieved the sword...very cool!

OR the dad ... lol
Imagine your kid just pulled a sword from the lake to begin with... and then the realization of the lakes history at the same time... talk about a momentary lapse in reason mind screw. heh

Dad needs a talking to.
His hoisting the sword demonstrated that it was unappropriated and could result in a serious conflict with his daughter over whom should rule.
Sleep with one eye open Dad. Sleep with one eye open.
:laughing7:

Great eyeball find Matilda!
(As if someone dwelling underwater presented it just so.....)
