GB, How are things in your parts?

Jim,

Yep that's the approach I tried to take working at the railway. We had all kinds of hot shot number crunchers on staff.

I kind of treated the railway like an electric utility or pipeline to keep it simple when making my business decisions. I'd explain it that way to the new hires....think of it this way the railway is effectively a pipeline to transport goods from point A to point B.

The capacity limit we have on a daily basis if not utilized is effectively wasted and you start with a fresh slate the next day.

You could probably apply that principle to most businesses really. Easy peasey?.....:laughing7::laughing7::laughing7:

The sleepy R version of unloading a gondola of tie plates.
Unload on the ground, line up 20 men, 6 ft apart, throw 23.5 lb steel plate to one another to pile plates down in pile.
KISS 16yr old me, why not roll car to pile throw straight onto pile. 4hrs work done in 30 minutes.
Young me got almost fired for bright idea.
:dontknow: Now we were working hard doing the dog-but when road master came back and we were all laying down doing the dog resting, all hell was released on me.
Always remember the life lessons that are bestowed upon me.

Jim,

They did a lot of stupid things but did get some things right. Lots of high volume low rate traffic would be hauled in solid unit trains to make it more profitable and efficient, coal and grain come to mind.

They also had a rail service in place going both east and west between Montreal and Vancouver called a land bridge. That way the shipping lines based in Europe or Asia didn't have to go around the panama canal to get to the other coast for delivering their goods. It was cheaper to send them via the railway to the opposite coast.
