Fords Classic Car Commercials (1950's)





Those are 1956 Fords. The move to the suburbs was in full swing then with more freeways being built and inexpensive homes close to them. Unlike married women who lived in the city and had access to public transport, the suburban housewife was trapped at home without that second car. Ford even offered discount financing for second cars, not just for the wife but also for the growing teenage population. As he said, it just made good sense to get a second car. The fact she could go anywhere she wanted was both a blessing and a curse. She could go to PTA meetings and go shopping while hubby was in the city shopping. She was also able to engage in less savory activities with other men while Hubby was at work and none the wiser.
