Well, I went back over to the old town today. I didn't get to hunt it like I wanted to because the oil field people were running around like crazy laying seismic cables all over the place. The cables were from what I could see about 2 mi. long and were 5 horizonal and 5 vertical lines per mile. I did find a bunch of bottles which I don't have oall the pics yet. There was one Pepsi bottle sitting upright out in the middle of nowhere. The very top was broken :'( so I left it as I found it. Beside it is a long handled tine tiller that I found close by. That I liberated and it came in handy shortly after that.
I was heading back to the Jeep when I got a signal near some junk. It was repeatable but scratchy, as it would repeat from left to right but not up and down, it could have easily been missed.
At this point, the coin needs to be cleaned so that I can tell what the date and mint is. For some reason, the soil here is rough even on silver as it looks to be pitted pretty bad. All non ferrus metals all seem to have this green patina stuff on it.

I swear that looks like it says 1916 on that SLQ!!! I hope for your sake it does, that would be a very nice find! It's still cool if it's not.

are there Stars under the Bird ?

Only 16 & 17 Type 1, "don't" Have them.

GOOD LUCK & congrats either way !

jeff

Well, from what I can see so far is a "D" mint mark and yes there are stars under the eagle on the reverse.

Some of you really have sharp eyes. I haven't a clue what that coin is let alone the date! Monty

That's a great site, stoney, and a very nice quarter.

These generally clean up well for me. I hunt an area here in Michigan that does this same thing to coins. I found an IH once that just fell apart while I was attempting to use electrolysis on it. The coin was rotten all the way through. I've not seen this happen with silver yet.

Also, I love your photos.

Thanks guys. Guess I'm gonna have to build a Floater electrolysis. For this type of corrosion, I used a bit of nitric acid in various degrees of dilution. I put a drop on, let it sit for 3 or 4 sec. then wipe off and rinse in water. The back came out pretty good but the front is gonna need more work.

Way ta go Stoney!

Great find and love those pics!!

Nana ;)

Nice find, Stoney. That quarter looks like the indianheads do around here. A purty shade of green.

LOL Haupin, that's what color the club was tonight. Although there was no unanimous decision as to the date so far. After some cleaning though, to me it looks like a 1924D. But the front has so much silver oxide under the green that a lot is still unreadable at this point.

But I've located 2 more places in this site that maybe things will turn for the better. One happens to be one of the schools and I also found another glass dump along with some cellar holes.

Man Stoney, what's in the soil out there that does that to silver?? I've never seen silver come out of the ground like that! Pennies!? Yeah, silver?? NO!

I don't know what is in the soil, Lonewolfe. It may explain why no pennies are being found. I saw a silver dollar with the same mess on it. Iron cables aren't affected by it though.

Nuclear waste dump. Try the Big Rock Point nuclear power plant area near Charlevoix? ;D

It's probably due to past extreme chemical fertilizer exposer. I've seen it in Michigan already. But, it is rather rare.

Last year I hunted the site of a 19th century Michigan church which was then all pine trees.? The coins were awful, most looked more like they came out of the ocean.
