1-19-2012 :icon_sunny: Hi TN TH ers , Until yesterday getting lucky meant finding my car in the mall parking lot. A few winter hunts with nothing to shout about led to a desperation move to hunt a cellar hole that has been pounded out for decades by countless others including myself . I started on the outer perimeter where my first keeper was a laborer badge or hat emblem WJ RR related . I hit a few flat buttons which goes with the old theory that a place is never hunted out . I was told a 1860 Army Colt pistol came out of this hole . ::) Never know . This cellar hole is a big one as seen in the pic . Early 1800's :icon_scratch: wealthy landowner mansion . Sifting through the debris of red brick is a pain but it was worth it . Button , another button , a few more buttons , nails , a button , more nails , a button etc. :laughing7: Three missed coins in the rubble . My first for 2012 Bust dime and two 1840's large cents . The well worn dime is a 1821 but it has been a while for an early dime , in fact that hunt produced a couple of sweet coins and made it to the top :hello2: . At first glance the black disc was a one reale . Found out hours later that is wasn't Spanish but early US silver :icon_scratch: after a few baths to get the black oxidation off to get some detail . :o A great start for the New year and finally got a little action out here in the jersey woods . Thanks for stopping in , :hello2: 8) dawg

You pulled some great finds there Dawg ;D
Are you really sifting ?
I got a few holes and dumps so full of brick & iron, MDing is definitely only scratching the surface.
Was thinking of attempting the sifter, never actually did it...
Congrats on the Bust & Coppers
Opens up a way to get a few deeper masked out coins  I am the brickmover until the pieces are small enough to dig , get out the detector , listen for deep target then throw the dirt in a sifter . I built my own out of rat wire Thanks for the interest Herbi

Congrats on the silver & other nice finds! Great pictures also! I hope you find out more about the laborer tag.
Hi Rob , Update on an id from my local historian bud . 1870's West Jersey Railroad cap badge id for men laying the tracks , maintenance etc. , nickel plated . Rare at this point , some examples for conductor , firemen , & engineer same style with RR name on them , but no known laborer tags at least locally  Thinking of restoration then donating this piece to the museum . This one doesn't have the name of the RR . West Jersey ended service in the early fifties . Remnants nearby tracks exist ... see pic ... Thanks for your interest , I'm at work and have to get back shortly , Many Thanks to All , for the comments , appreciate it guys . I'll get back to ya ' all tonight ... :headbang:  8) dawg

awesome stuff as usual dawg! I often think at a cellar hole site imagining what the home that once stood here was like.so sad to think such a prominet home is reduced to a barren square hole in the ground but, then again...I say to myself I probably wouldn't be holding this amazing coin or button in my hand if this house were still a home at this point in time

agreed love the old homes that survived the ages and feel bad about those that once where ... no cellar holes , no HEAVYMTALNUT banner digs :icon_scratch: you would be showing us some clad or a 1998 hot wheel you dug instead of a chain cent ::) The twin chimney RTDE3 Rob posted lately is a great example of a prominent home that once was :) that one was a massive early 1800's home . Some of your cellar holes had those twin chimneys , no doubt . Long for more of those sites . HH and Thanks for the comment Dave

Hi Josh , been meaning to get back to you but I get sidetracked . Something strange is going on here but I 'm not complaining :icon_scratch: temps in the 50 's . The nights get cold , like tonight is in the twenties with flurries . The strange part is NO frozen ground :hello2: I feel sorry for the diggers West and North .They are in a deep freeze and I'm sure this is not coming at them . Monday will be near 60 degrees and the rest of the week will be above seasonal temps , last week of the January weather forecast , looks mild , fifties and high forties . :icon_sunny: This month is usually the worst . Thanks , man 8)
