Genetic Evidence and Land Rights: Will it Make a Difference?

The study of genetics has reshaped our understanding of human history, particularly for indigenous communities like the Blackfoot people of North America. Recent advancements in DNA analysis have unveiled remarkable insights into the ancestral ties of modern populations with ancient peoples. In a groundbreaking study, genetic scientists partnered with representatives of the indigenous Blackfoot nation to explore the genetic lineage of their people. Published in the journal Science Advances, the research unveils an unexpected relationship between contemporary Blackfoot individuals and some of the earliest inhabitants of the Americas. Through comprehensive analysis, the team identified a previously undiscovered ancient lineage within the Blackfoot genome, dating back approximately 18,000 years. This discovery sheds light on the unique evolutionary journey of the Blackfoot people, challenging traditional assumptions and connecting them to the dawn of indigenous presence in North America.

Not sure where defining Blackfeet beyond one of the most widespread North American language groups is going to help them make claims to any land.
Their last two land reductions weren't done because of thier language.

Algonquin been North . For European cultures that is where the Algonquin originated. Algonquin carried meat and hides South to barter with other natives.. No surprise and nothing new.
Unless you stand North and look about for hides or meat.

The Blackfeet in turn /time were subdued. Then confined range of tenancy right by land assignment of reservation. Not based upon being an unrecognized nation. We going to reverse that now as a result of their age and or prior tenant status?

Unless science benefits the Blackfeet , (has it) why the article?
Rights were denied long ago. Blackfeet remain Blackfeet.
Their position today is a result of misidentified D.N.A. yesterday?

It’s interesting but I’m wondering if they are intentionally avoiding saying they are an exclusive genome… to me it sounds like there was a divergence 18,000 years ago that hadn’t been accounted for that only makes up part of the Blackfoot genome.

I’m still in the camp that 15,000 years is a long time for people to shift and interbreed and forge new identities, I don’t see any more of a link between Blackfeet and paleo Indians, than i see myself a Celtic Druid or a Visigoth and even that doesn’t sniff 15,000 years of history.

I do like that the oral tradition aligns with the idea of people coming through an ice free corridor, where there would be plenty of lakes and water from the melting ice
