Now in my second year of this hobby I am finding more rings, some with stones. I would appreciate any websites or information about identifying gem stones and determining whether they are real or not.

I have purchased a diamond tester, so I've got that covered, but the colored gem stones are a mystery to me.

Here is a 10k vintage ring I found yesterday at the lake shore. Looking at the stone it appears pitted because it was in sand/mud for God knows how long and wondered if that alone is an indication it is not a precious or semi precious gem.

Thanks!

Beautiful ring !

Thanks for the link, I'll read through it. Yes I have an 8x and 10x loupe.

You have to be careful with what you think are diamonds. If you own a diamond/moissanite tester you will definitely know if your ring has real diamonds. I had a regular diamond tester and my stones tested diamond. Someone else has a moissanite tester and my diamonds weren't real. Ask a jeweler what I am talking about. If you plan on selling your jewelry you may want to buy a diamond moissanite tester to make sure that you do indeed have diamonds.
