Classic!! Looks like he caught a nice one!! Some finds aren't always in the ground and some treasures aren't found with a metal detector!!

You'll both remember that day for a long long time.

Catfish?? Can't tell from the picture. HMMMM, fishing or detecting. Hard decision :icon_scratch:

The greatest treasure of all creating wonderful memories! :icon_sunny:

Didn't have to think to long. Sometime you just have to put things on hold. It was all worth it. Its not a catfish, its a Grinnel (If spelled right) One of the only fish still here from the prehistoric times. Not good for anything, except for a little one to catch. It was a lot of fun, and well worth it.

He's a keeper for sure. . . and so is the fish

Memories like this are the best

Thanks for all the wounderful comments. They mean so much to me. This little man is my buddy. I've read all the comments to him. He's proud to see his picture, and what everyone said. Again Thanks......

Re: Gave up a detecting trip, and found a treasure that can't be dug.

That is what it is all about, Whilst I have been trying for 30 years to get one of those ( a kid ) I so much enjoy watching the great pleasures grandparents and parents get out of doing anything with their G'Parents or Dads. When I am out fishing, I gladly help youngsters out, casting, untangling lines, fixing reels, showing them how to " Call Fish ". And I also love taking pics of kids and dads fishing. I will post one here to show y'all what I mean...... This guy is a member of our detecting club and he would rather be out with his son and daughter rather than dirt fishing.......

Man, seeing the picture of the grennel took me years back!

In the flood waters of the Mississippi near Natchez me and my buddies would catch tons of those things. Super strong, and mean. I know it sounds horrible now but we found the easiest way to get them off the hook was to shoot them in the head with 22 pistols. For those unfamiliar with the species, they have very sharp teeth!
Many say they are not edible. I guess some of our black neighbors didn't know that. Grennels, or shoe pics/dog fish/mud fish are ferocious fighters. I feel bad now for all the ones we caught, leaving them on the bank. One thing's for certain, they have a way of taking over an area if not controlled.

Keep doing what you do to enjoy life!

I'm jealous, I am lucky though, both my girls love to fish and detect. It is so nice to spend time with them that isn't in front of the TV or computer. I wouldn't trade a day of fishing or detecting with either one or both of my kids for anything. The best days are when we go fishing and the fish aren't cooperating we just grab the detectors out of the trunk.

Re: Gave up a detecting trip, and found a treasure that can't be dug.

good call that the best cache catch I have seen in a while. Much more valuable then a couple pull tabs and even a few gold rings.

Re: Gave up a detecting trip, and found a treasure that can't be dug.

That is Priceless!!! He will remember that fishing trip long after you are gone. Time flashes past us and we sometimes take things for granted. Just the other day my 18 years old son was discussing a camping trip I took him on when he was 5 years old. I didn't think he even remembered it but was I wrong. He could tell me almost every detail of that trip and we have had many more since. He is heading off to college this August. Your grandson will tell his children about this fishing trip some day, yu can be sure of that happening.

Thanks for Posting,
Roy :icon_sunny: :icon_sunny: :icon_sunny:

to me the best treasure you find are the friends and family you get to share your life with...
by the way, nice fish...did you eat him ?

Re: Gave up a detecting trip, and found a treasure that can't be dug.

If that grennel is related to the common Bowfin, there is only two places on that fish that are good eating. That would be the cheek meat (facial cheeks) ;D. I have been told that it tastes like cod. ???

Re: Gave up a detecting trip, and found a treasure that can't be dug.

Yes he will remember this for the rest of his life. He will tell me things that we did when he was much younger. He's seven now. I know what you mean about the memories that will be left with him. I can remember the days back in Mississippi when I was his age, and my grandmother took me fishing in the old pond everyday she could. I've never forgot it, and never will. I just wish everyone could experence this. Needless to say you have struck me right in the heart. These comments have lift me in tears. I appreciate everyone for the comments, and continue to show the little ones the we love them. So many don't know what it is to have someone to spend a little time with them. LOVE them with all you heart. They will remember it. Thanks to everyone. I didn't know that These pictures would bring such heartwarming comments. What a family of friends. Thanks to all.

Terrific pictures of that little guy! And you're right, he'll remember. I can remember my Grandmother taking me fishing allll the time when I was a little one. I can also remember her being with me when I caught my very first fish. It was a catfish, but I thought they were suppose to be called a Catfish King. So I was running around with that thing still on the hook yelling, "I gotta catfish king!" :D I was probably five or six years old. Thanks for jogging my memory, River! Good times!

Nana :)
