My oldest son asked me to bring in some relics and give a talk to his class. They finished up the history of the Civil War, well at the 4th grade level, and it fit well.. me coming in. So I put together 6 cases of relics based on location found, have the history of the actions and camps in my head ready to talk about everything. Well, my son in 1st grade asked his teacher about it... so I am going there too!! Then, the 5th grade teacher found out and now I'm going up in front of all three classes!! Oh that is going to be a lot of questions!!!!! ;-) In addition to the relics I'm taking in a 1861 Springfield and a 1858 Saber.. they said it was ok to bring them in! We'll see.. ;-)
In tray 4 is a little cannon I dug out of a camp.. lead that had the side blown out!! Pretty cool!!
Tray 5 is stuff that all came out of the same spot, part of the leading edge of the Mile Hill Fight outside of Leesburg, VA. The chunk of saber was the best!! The full set of US plates were all found with in 5 feet of each other along with 30 some 3 ringers in the same hole. Some Union guy did the old drop and run I think!! ;-)
Wish me luck!!!!!!

Update: I survived!! Had some great questions.. the best was "Do you do this for a living or do you have a real job?" That was from a 5th grader! A 1st grader asked me if I was a "ideoligist" as in "eye-dee-oh-og-eye-gist" took a bit to figure out he meant archaeologist!! ;-) Last minute decision to NOT bring in the Springfield but the saber and cannon balls went over well. The 4th and 5th graders really knew a lot more then I thought they would. The comments ranged form John Brown's raid to knowing what a rear guard was! I also ID'ed a Great-Great-Greatgrandfather of one of the students who was in charge of a local unit.
