My oldest son asked me to bring in some relics and give a talk to his class. They finished up the history of the Civil War, well at the 4th grade level, and it fit well.. me coming in. So I put together 6 cases of relics based on location found, have the history of the actions and camps in my head ready to talk about everything. Well, my son in 1st grade asked his teacher about it... so I am going there too!! Then, the 5th grade teacher found out and now I'm going up in front of all three classes!! Oh that is going to be a lot of questions!!!!! ;-) In addition to the relics I'm taking in a 1861 Springfield and a 1858 Saber.. they said it was ok to bring them in! We'll see.. ;-)

In tray 4 is a little cannon I dug out of a camp.. lead that had the side blown out!! Pretty cool!!
Tray 5 is stuff that all came out of the same spot, part of the leading edge of the Mile Hill Fight outside of Leesburg, VA. The chunk of saber was the best!! The full set of US plates were all found with in 5 feet of each other along with 30 some 3 ringers in the same hole. Some Union guy did the old drop and run I think!! ;-)

Wish me luck!!!!!!

Update: I survived!! Had some great questions.. the best was "Do you do this for a living or do you have a real job?" That was from a 5th grader! A 1st grader asked me if I was a "ideoligist" as in "eye-dee-oh-og-eye-gist" took a bit to figure out he meant archaeologist!! ;-) Last minute decision to NOT bring in the Springfield but the saber and cannon balls went over well. The 4th and 5th graders really knew a lot more then I thought they would. The comments ranged form John Brown's raid to knowing what a rear guard was! I also ID'ed a Great-Great-Greatgrandfather of one of the students who was in charge of a local unit.

Oh yeah, that will be interesting to see what over cautious paranoid left leaning teacher is gonna freak out that you brought a gun into school. Good luck.

I'm sure the kids will love it.

Thanks! I am trying to get everything organized and photographed. Since the weather is suppose to be pushing 100 this weekend I might "redo" my collection. At last count I was up to 50 or so large coppers... I'll get some "group pictures" and post them...

Thanks! It was a good day there... we jst had our end of school picnic and a lot of kids had talked about it.. I had two mothers tell me their kids want metal detectors now!!

Fantastic !

Kids are funny, I have done a similar thing with the local school.

Best comment was from a 8 year old girl;

I was explaining that the nearby houses were built over Roman Graves & pottery Kilns. She said;
'that means I'm living on dead bodies'

I didn't think any of them lived there & I hope she can sleep at night ::)

That box 'O coins is impressive !! I hope I get to match it someday !!

that was good of you to go thru all of that. Congratulations for standing up to the classes. :thumbsup: I thought there was a politics forum for the other stuff on this site., silly me.

High honors to you for what you did. I think that is just fantastic. My children have taken in things that I have found over the years. They have studied the Civil and Revolutionary Wars. It is so cool of you to take the time to share your finds and knowledge with our youth. Congrats on a successful venture 8)
