Garrett Problems

Detector(s) used
White's XLT
:'( Well, I got my new Garrett 1350 in on Thursday, assembled it, and took it out the next day for it's maiden voyage...and ran into problems. I have a quarter at 5" in my coin garden and, try as I might, I could not get the Garrett to pick it up. This is in sandy, moist soil. I knew I probably had something wrong, so I went back inside and watched the video and re-read the instruction manual it came with, and adjusted a few settings, and took it back out. Still nothing. I got a one-direction blip that ID'd as a pull-tab, but that was it. Couldn't even find it in all-metal. Then I pulled out my old reliable BH 707...and found the coin just fine. Still optomistic, I replaced the coil with the larger DD coil the detector came with; still nothing. Okay, a bit irritated now, I put the detector away and dragged it out again the next day, and the same thing was happening. Only now, the problem was the Garrett Belltone that indicated a coin. I only dug one coin using the Belltone, the other belltone identifiers were trash, even at shallow depths. In fact, shallow was the best that I could manage, as the deepest target I dug was at 5 inches, a large twisted hunk of copper tubing. Very upset by this point, I was going to pack it in and call Garrett for help. As I was putting everything away, I tried to turn the detector off, nothing. No response from the power button. I pulled the battery pack and the detector turned off, but then would not turn back on. Finally came to the conclusion that the detector was probably defective or damaged from the get-go, and not a problem with Garrett's product. Luckily, since I purchased from Kellyco, I just called them this morning, explained the problem, and gave me instructions to ship the detector back, and at the same time I upgraded and ordered a White's XLT, a brand I feel really comfortable with as I have used them before. I had to pay full price for the White's but they're going to credit back to my card when they get the Garrett back. Talk about heart-broken, though!!

Personally I like Kellyco.

But I also think, Sinse The GARRETT is Defective, They should Give you Full Price Off Their SALE Price on the Whites.

It isn't like you JUST decided to TRADE UP, because you Changed your Mind.

I'd ask to talk to the COMPANY PRESIDENT.

Trust me, if Kellyco had been open on Saturday when everything went kaput, I would have raised a stink, but I had cooled off enough by today to just go ahead and do the exchange. They were very pleasant and apologized for my troubles, and the White's is supposed to be here on Tuesday, so i was only out a detector for about three days, and in that time I got another 3/4" of rain so the ground is still nice and moist; perfect for digging. Happy Hunting!

I hate to hear about your problems with the Garrett detector also since I am a Garrett fan. Unfortunately since you did your return that way you are going to have to "eat" the return shipping and a 20% fee. I think I would have tried to work out a different deal if I were you. No doubt the detector was defective. It should have rang up that quarter with ease. I have done a lot of business with Kellyco and they will make accomodations if your case is strong enough and I think yours was. My only complaint with Kellyco is that sometimes they overdo it on their ads for some of their detectors, especially the Chinese made ones. Well, two complaints....They shipped my 2500 in the same factory box it came in and it was pretty flimsy. I was lucky mine wasn't damaged too. Last time I ordered, they shipped in a better container and that made me feel better. As bad as I hate to say it, if you are more comfortable with the White's product, then that's the way to go. As I have said before, if everyone liked only one brand there would only be one brand available! Good luck and I look forward to seeing your posts of finds in the future. JIM

Thanks, Jimmileo. I think I might be getting full credit back on the Garrett since it was a problem with the detector and not just because I felt like it. I was speaking with the rep who answered my call and she did mention that I would have to pay the return shipping, but she would waive the restocking fee? Is that what the 20% is for?

They call it a restocking fee, but actually it's because they can't sell the detector as new and have to discount it. On one that is defective I'll bet the manufacturer has some kind of a buy back or credit agreement with them. Glad you didn't get stuck for all of it. JIM
