Metal Detecting
I'm going to invest in a new detector and pin pointer soon and was hoping for some feedback. I'm using an old Whites machine and a bounty hunter. My price range is around $400. I have my eye on a Garrett Ace 400 bundle that comes with the Garrett AT pin pointer for $386 before shipping and taxes. Anyone have any major complaints about the 400? The only thing I noticed is there aren't distinct tones for every metal. I tend to dig most everything anyway, so this isn't a deal breaker by any means. Also, if you have any other equipment suggestions for my price range, your input is appreciated. Thanks guys!

I have a buddy that has one and does well. Tones are nice but they can still mislead you. Be nice if you could find a dealer that would let you try it.

I would suggest that you look at some other brands in that price range. The 400 has very limited capabilities due to the lack of ground balance. This forces you to run with the sensitivity turned down and you loose depth, thus missed targets.

I've found more silver with the Ace 350 I had than the 2 current detectors I have now combined.....was it because I detected a whole lot more back then and it was my first detector I took out to my easy permissions.....absolutely.....point is it'll work just fine as a beep and dig detector, which you say is your style of detecting.

The Ace 400 has three ranges of tone.....low grunt for the iron range, mid tone for the nickel/gold ring range, and high tone for coins and silver jewelry. The Ace 400 is light weight, easy to learn, and can find the good stuff. Additionally Garrett's customer service is top notch. Check around , many dealers will ship for free. Don't worry too much about the ground balance that some consider a negative....I've dug silver rings and silver coins with my Ace 400 at depths up to eight inches.

If those coins and rings had been in bad soil (not sweet) the depth would be at a minimum. If you can ground balance your detector to the soil conditions that the area you have chosen to hunt then you can run better sensitivity, thus your depth will be better. I have logged a good many hours with my 400 and now it is my last choice out of the rack. My Bounty Hunter Land Ranger Pro and Fisher F-44 will do a much better job for me and they are in the same price range. If Caveman does choose the 400 then I still wish him the best, In my book there are better choices.

In my humble oppinion, a solid detector - and definetly a 400 USD one - should have:
- a sensitivity control
- some kind of discrimination control with true all metal mode
- treashold control
- ground balance control, manual one too, not just authomatic one

for smaller items it should run at 12 KHz or higher, though some models of detectors are suficiently sensitive even though they are running at lower frequencies.

The diplay is not necesary, in my oppinion, nor are 10K of different tones.

I would look at Pirate MDs.
