Garret pro pinpointer issue

Here's your solution. Get a Harbor Freight Centex pinpointer for a backup for all the times you have to send your pro in for repairs. The HF only cost $18. and has the same pickup range. In fact it has a range adjustment. I have used my HF for two years and added a target light to it so I can hunt silent. You can add a cell phone vibrator to it if you like. Very good information. We have a HF right down the road. I may actually look at one to use as a spare but I do love my PP.

Well here is one reason why the cheap Teknetics (and similar) can be better than the expensive pro, it seams the pro's factory sensitivity adjustment can drift causing it to need factory recalibration, but the Teknetics needs to be adjusted every time you turn it on, bit more work but never have to worry about drifting adjustments...

Well this is news to me Ive had mine quite some time & havent expeirienced anything as u have stated is there any facts to back what ur saying up, or are u saying this because u have the teknetics ?

Facts? Not sure what would count, I am going on a number of things:

1. The Garrett is factory preadjusted threshold.
2. The Teknetics is manual adjust every time you turn it on.
3. My 35+ yrs of electronic experience in repair of consumer and commercial electronics.

So I am assuming (or troubleshooting) from what I have read that some of the PROs threshold adjustments are drifting and/or are factory set too close to the threshold causing the stated problems with it.
An excellent way to confirm this is for someone with a PRO pointer (preferably with the problem) to either try to take it apart and see if there is any adjustment on board and if tweaking it fixes the problem or send it to me and I will do such. Assuming it is out of warranty of course....

So this has no facts period & its mainly ur opinión on them drifting i have never heard of them doin that yes they r adjusted & work very well thats probly y 90% of people have them for reliability built like tanks. And then of course what I also find funny is ur not in a dete toe fixing buisiness not design so i dought u know whats inside them again im also goin by exp with using one & by no legitamate facts its all opinion

Just trying to help those with problems and provide alternative options...and yes I do have a very good understanding about the technical workings of different types of MDs, yes I have worked on them in the past, yes I have built my own, etc....NOT saying the Pro isn't a great pinpointer, just pointing (excuse the pun) out the differences and offering a possible solution to the problem. I find it most interesting and can't wait to get to the bottom of it (from a technical standpoint)
Sort of metal detector problem detecting.....;-)

I sure hope Garrett worked out the problem before mine arrived last week . I have'nt even had it out yet , but will be watching for the symtoms described ..

cristo, Centar has a good point. I have over 40 years of electronic experience as backing. Just read all the posts about Pro problems. Most are calibration and drifting problems. But don't try to take one apart unless you know what you are doing. It is very easy to break the switch. Frank...

What did you find out Dan?

I got my PP back yesterday from Garrett. Its in a new shell. The only apparent old part is the back (battery) plate with the serial number on it. There is no explanation as to what they did but it may be a brand new unit with my old SN. It is very responsive and it works great. Hats off to this customer service.
