Garnet hill- garnet cleaning?

One of the other threads reminded me I have a box of garnet holding material gathered by Ely NV. Anyone have any suggestions on how to remove from host material and clean the garnets? I've damaged a few trying different ways of bashing on them! Lol some I have out but still have a bit of the host material still on them.. Help!?
