If it's a lead button and cast that way, what are the chances it was lost near musket balls that are about the same size, and same color? I've probably had my grubby hands over more dug buttons than anyone on this forum and that sure doesn't even whisper button to me. That said, I never say never but..." (END QUOTE)

They are rare indeed IP, but..................... They are out there!
Last winter I found a minnie ball button; the bullet was cut at the lowest groove, and a (I believe a fork was used, because the "button holes" were square as is a fork tine)
couple of holes were made in it, to sew it on an article of clothing.
By the way, I found the rest of the minnie ball and that's how I know where it was cut.
I still say button, and Big Cy's pictures go hand in hand with Ivan's description. Ivan nailed it.

Well that find falls under the heading of.... Anything is possible, not exactly great criteria for ID'ing a find. The bottom line is we'll never know for sure, so in the end it will be everyone throwing their best guess in a hat.

Caliper time? BTW your RB looks like it's for a .69 cal, as opposed to the .58 cal minnies.

Not mine. Bullets don't interest me enough to take pictures, well not many anyway.

Bullets get a lot of attention from me, probably because I have handloaded since the late 1950s and I have done a lot of experimenting and research on various kinds of that erea. I get the feeling those items are swaged rather than cast. If swaged they probably are buttons or some other use other than bullets. Most bullets of the CW were cast I think. But being a simple round ball, it's very difficult to tell. Monty

Yes, but only on the condition if they are lost it must be among musket balls.
