Game Strip & Wood...

My eyes & ears told me that a couple of Game Strips (Maize) have been flatten ready to plough in. It was 2 fields over from the wood so it was worth a try to see if the Roman area stretched that far. I spent 1 hour in the bitting wind with only 2 musket balls & a 17th C Button. So went to the Wood to seek shelter & find better stuff. (hunting alone again)

3 Hours in the woods with exactly 100 shotgun cartridges, below was the result:

4 Roman Coins - Couple of good ones :icon_thumright:
1 scrappy Iron Age (Celtic) Bronze Unit - 2nd from this wood :o
A mount which was in such great condition that I thought it was Georgian rubbish, but its Roman & had a enamelled bar decoration. I have never seen this type in any books, not on any of the 2 UK databases. Must be a rarer type of mount but for what??

Re: Game Strip & Wood...

Great stuff Cru :icon_thumleft:

The coins seem to come out of the wood better than the fields!

I could only think of a type of military fittment, but its a total guess. Researched quite hard to find another without joy. It's condition is amazing, so is one of the Roman's, I'm beginning to like this wood :D

Re: Game Strip & Wood...

I glad to see you are still getting out Cru :icon_thumleft:. Impressive finds and I found a similar mount in a book I have on Roman Arms and Armour. It looks like a fitting on the end of a strap (the two holes) which could then be fitted ,in an adjustable way, via the two lugs on to the armour itself. The one in my book belongs to "Lorica Segmentata"(the classical Roman armour). I couldn't see any thing on the "Hamata"(chain mail) armour that was similar but it is possible that there may be a similar fitting on "Squamata"(scale armour) that I just couldn't find. The book is over 300 pages :tongue3:. I would post an image but the scanner is Kaput, I will try to get out and buy a new one tomorrow and post or email an image then.

Yeah, never had a Amour Fitment before, so the Soldiers visited this site which would account for the large %age of higher denominations. Fingers crossed I think it maybe...no I will hold that thought for later.
