Unlikely to find them on a Galleon - I have also seen them on Dutch vessels and French vessels all returning to Europe - I doubt very much a Galleon would have them on board unless inbound with trade goods or left over...is possible. Just because you have some Spanish coins does not make it a Spanish boat...cheers

And since you live in the BVI on Tortola North Shore is Ballast Bay take a drive there, the bay and name enough said...

Do you get a signal from them with your seahunter?
I have some data somewhere on a place in Barbadoes that made tiles of all varieties amongst other things such as glass ware for the return voyage to Europe. If I find the link I will post it,but certainly were made down island, ive seen many of the same tiles of both shapes curved and flat in harbours lp_roofdetail3.jpg

Cheers

tiles were also carried as cargo / ballast -- might not be the most high paying cargo but it beat carrying rocks and was easier to off load.

Yes, ballast stones were most typically river rock. In the case of the treasure fleets, they often dumped all their ballast and used gold and silver as ballast. If you find a large amount of ballast stones in one spot, either they dumped them to take on extra cargo or you have a wreck site.

Like everyone else said anything could be used for ballast ,those tiles would be great, england would ship out bricks and bring back more valuble stuff, I had a home where a sea capt lived ,it had a cobblestone walk ,supposed ballest stone,I have also heard of chimneys and foundations built from these
