Here's an interesting find from the deep Northern Michigan woods. So I spent the evening canvassing a new fur-trade site and, to date, have found a good number of late 1700s - early 1800s relics (to include a couple full-size handed forged hoes and trade axes). Today I found a "miniature hoe" leading me to believe that maybe fur traders had small samples to pitch to the Native Americans. It would have to be better than lugging in a bunch of tools. Maybe.

or possibly a hide-scraper. That's always a possibility

quite an interesting find, wtg and thanks for posting

IMO... What you have found is called an "adze"... or a type of one... or similar to an adze and has another name...

It is not a display... it is a tool... for woodworking... a small one.

Definitely could have been but it must have been for some really 'delicate' wood working as this one is soo light in mass 3.5 inches long. I have a number of bigger ones and the design is the same so quite plausible

This one would be for more detailed / delicate work... smaller pieces like furniture... not a canoe.

OR...
Possible was made for child... but ? ? ?

Nice find and maybe someone will recognize it. Possibly some type of scraper for cleaning small fur pelts

That's a really interesting find. I was thinking "hide scarper" too. I'm guessing this is a fun site to detect. Keep the posts coming!

Ot would be a perfect size for a hide-scraper. The dirt has been really kind to it and with how light it is I just cant feel how it could cut wood in any efficient manner.

I found my only belt axe that measures about the same length.
So they made small things.
Still it would hurt getting hit by either.

dang. That's a small one!
Still I'd like to find a full size one.
I have to wonder if these (yours + mine) were for the young lads or women.
Then again they make 4" coils. :laughing7:
