??? Found these at a local park. The park is within 1/8 of a mile from a Cemetery. I think it is some type of funerary item. The first piece is VERY heavy and the pictures are the front and back of that item. The third picture shows the other item. It is light. I found the fist item 6.5 inches down (measured) and the second item was found at around 4 inches. Any one have any clue?

in all honesty...........it looks like part of a gutter and downspout to me. probably from the old workhouse that used to stand on the property. i would throw it away and be done with it. nothing to lose sleep over, in my opinion.

Either way - they are two (intriguing) lumps of metal.

"Along comes a city cop and tells me that if I bury anything on park property I will get a ticket for littering and have to go to court."

and you have received legal advice! ;D

MasterEagle, You obviously have huge respect for those passed. Rather than rebury your finds, maybe they're worthy of a Museum? Did anyone ever say, rebury Tutenkhamans mask?

Cheers, Mike

Come on, there is way too much superstition being thrown about in this thread.
The bible does not ever place any particular damnation on someone who digs up a burial site, either on purpose or accidently. and for that matter there is no special prayer that needs to be said either. And I cant say i blame maverick, 20 years later and 2000 miles away, I sure wouldnt go back either.
If you find out that this stuff is part of the cemetary, then I am sure the city will let you put it back.
If not then throw it away lol. And by the way, now that someone mentioned the drainspout, I think I would have to agree with that. I was just checking out a very old building today for a new metal detecting spot while it was raining, so I noticed the drainspouts. They look very similar to what you have, a bit different from modern ones. I seriously doubt those are anything to do at all with a cemetary. No offense is meant by what I said, but superstion will only make people live a fearful existance, and i just wanted to clarify that biblically nothing is put forth on this subject, and so you do not need to have any extra worries about that.

Okay everyone here is what I have decided to do. I notified the city that I found the strange items and where in writing. I notified the cemetery in writing to same. I put the two items into a box and labeled it with the date and time I found them and placed them on a shelf in my basement. I have to agree that I did nothing wrong in this situation. If it was a grave site it is unmarked and unregistered. I did not willfully do something wrong or unethecial and I think you are right about nothing in the scriptures about it.

I have decided that this may not be the first questionable finds I make if I plan on doing this for any length of time. I have really appreciated everyone's input and thoughts. I am not forgetting these items exist unless the city or the cemetery want more info from me. If so I will gladly volunteer my time and machine to help search the area for more stuff. I have also decided that I will forgo any more detecting in this particular area to avoid digging up any more pieces of whatever this is. I may miss something good by doing this but I can live with it!!

Once again thank you everyone for your advice, guidance, support, concern etc. I am SO glad to be part of such a great community of people!!!

Thanks

you have handled it in the most adult way --I can think of ---my hat is off to you---like I have said-- once in great while during our metal hunts---we may accidently stumble across a "unmarked and unrecorded" grave site---you did NOTHING wrong --repeat NOTHING wrong ===you acted above board and have in good faith attempted to properly return the items to the best of your ability once you found out that it MIGHT BE funeral items---and are not hunting that site anymore--so you will not find more "stuff" to deal with---you have shown great compassion for the "dead" and shown great sense in dealing with this problem and have acted honoribly in all matters----now go back to detecting a fresh spot and enjoy life ----respecting the dead is honorible but life is for the living so don't waste your "living" time worrying about things you have no control over---thats my 2 cents ---Ivan

If it's any consolation. When I'm dead and buried about the last thing I am going to worry about is how the handles of my coffin hold up. You tried . . . more than I would have. ;) Probably some back-hoe operator cracked them off during a disinterment or an interment that encroached into the next plot. These things happen. We had a neighbor whose graveside ceremony had to be postponed because they found a whole pre-existing coffin in the pre-paid family plot! Everyone makes mistakes - even cemetery workers.

You wouldn't believe how cemeteries are lost, forgotten, abused, etc. How can someone lose a cemetery????? Easy. They let it grow up over the years, especially before lawns were mowed and the chickens kept the yard at bay.

I helped find one lost cemetery and get it cleaned up. Believe it or not, the farmer of the field next door had gone in with his bulldozer years before and scooped aside several headstones, depositing them "over there." Dozens of graves were later visible (sunken), but no one had any idea which headstone went on which grave. Sad.

A friend of mine got a call from his cousin up the road last month. Prepping his field for the spring crop (corn), a headstone appeared and the cousin put it in his barn. It was my friend's great-great-grandfather's headstone. My friend went up to the barn and brought it back to his house. It's propped against his fence now. He has no idea what to do with it.

We're still watching for a friend's great-grandfather's grave, which family legend says was buried in a field at the corner of "such-and-such roads" and marked with an iron headboard. Great! What are the odds of finding THAT 120 years later! :D

Interesting post. Thanks. -Noodle

:o YOU DONE IT NOW!!! YOU BETTER GET BACK TO THAT PARK AND FIND THOSE DUG HOLES YOU GOT THESE PIECES FROM! THEN PREFORM AN OLD DANCE THAT US RELIC HUNTERS DO WHEN WE UN'EARTH PARTS OF CASKETTS FROM A SHALLOW GRAVE. 1ST YOU NEED A RECORDING OF " BIG JOHN " RECORDED AND SUNG BY
JOHNY HORTON. 2ND; 1.5 GALLONS OF HOLY WATER, 3; A MEMBER OF THE ORIGINAL CAST OF GHOST BUSTERS AND A PRAYER RUGG . NOW, WHILE YOU ARE AT THE SITE THAT YOU DESTURBED WHILE LOOKING FOR LOST TREASURE, ROLL OUT THE RUG AND CAREFULLY PLACE EACH OF THE PIECES THAT YOU WILLFULLY DUG UP, BACK IN EACH HOLE!
START THE MUSIC!! NOW, WHILE SINGING ALONG WITH THE SONG, SPINKLE THE HOLY WATER ON EACH DESTURBED SITE AND PRAY FOR FORGIVENESS. THE MEMBER OF THE CAST OF GHOST BUSTERS IS JUST FOR YOUR SECURITY PERPOSES ONLY AND A FEE OF 3 THOUSAND DOLLARS IS THE NORN :-X GOOD LUCK ::)

Honestly what you found may be from an old coffin. Was the park always there, or did they move part of the cemetary to make room for the park?
I just sold on ebay an old deed to a cemetary in philadelphia that no longer exists because Temple needed more parking room in the 1950s. The gravestones were dumped in the Delaware as foundation for the Betsy Ross Bridge. I always wonder did they move the coffins??? Really??? Remember Poltergeist???

Don't freak out...if you feel really weird about it, go back and rebury them. If not, keep them and put them in your garden!
Cool find anyway!

No matter what happens to the material artifacts, if you believe in God and the Hereafter, say a prayer and be done! We, you, the deceased, and God will know that you meant no disrespect, and did everything within your power to make things right. The material objects mean nothing. It's what's in your heart that counts.

I second that.

Your desire to do the right thing is exceptional, and highly commendable.

looks to me like a small sarcophagus. is this by any chance an Egyptian Cemetery?

No I do not believe it is. It is near Memorial Park in the County of Cape Girardeau, in Missouri. They still adamantly refute that it came from their ground.

can you blame them---a family might sue them --losing a loved one and all that----plus its still a "legal" hassle even if they aren't sued by the family to rebury or move a body for them ---much easier ,cheaper and safer to go " nope not ours" --- Ivan

the one with the post has a odd "ring" on the base part ---is there any threading in the ring or is it smooth? if smooth might it have be used to tie down something? Ivan

Actually it looks more like a screw hole to me where this may have been screwed onto a surface. No threads just smooth.
is it a nail?
