Howdy folks revisited the dumpsite I raked last week in the 'fistful of marbles' blog and found a few more goodies. I took a ton of artifact pictures of things I found on the surface before I picked them up and am making a slideshow type post here. Freedom 7 was a little before my time so I had to do some research. Turns out this was part of project Mercury which had the goal of sending an astronaut into orbit around the Earth. Alan Shepard went up in the Freedom 7 and was the second man in space (Yuri Gregarin , a Russian, had gone up 23 days prior). This launch really boosted America's morale during cold war and an interest in the space program. Anyway take care happy hunting!

Good eye on the surface finds, there seems to be some older finds at the site as well.
Cool Freedom 7 medallion it's in really nice condition.
How deep do the finds go down, or are they just all surface? (dump site thinking here)

Thanks Pepper. Kind of tough to answer because its a sandy hillside that constantly tries to cave-in on you when you dig. Just surfaced hunted the site this time (first day I raked it) due to this difficulty. There are artifacts from 1890s or so at one end of dump but frankly did not want to work too hard digging as my tendonitis was really flaring up in my right arm (from metal detecting too much..lol). Would be near impossible to screen because of the amount of large cans there and lots of cacti as well. Think I'm done with this site for a long time just let it fallow a few seasons then return to harvest more marbles on the surface. I am trying to get out and explore/camp to find new sites but the low temps at night are keeping me close to home. Cold spring so far!
