Hi,

I dont often post on here as I detect in the UK but I thought you might like to see my first ever gold find. Found today in North Somerset UK.

I went searching around an 11th century Manor today, when I got there the owner wanted me to have a look on a piece of ground for a tag from his dogs collar he had lost a few days ago. Normally I wouldn't have paid the ground a second glance, full of foil and crisp packets. Anway I set to work, soon enough I thought I had located the tag, blimey I thought that's a bit posh for a dog I wiped the dirt off and I was holding what you see below in my hand a whopping 27mm across!, I'm still buzzing, my first ever gold on Friday the 13th!

Can tell me more about the coin?

Cheers,

Jon

awesome find. that is one beautiful coin. way to go and keep it up

Hi,

Thanks for your comments everyone, no I never did find that dog tag! Sadly I think the landowner will want to keep it but he has just sorted me out with another 40 acres to detect on so I can't complain.

Ok BK I'll post my next interesting finds on here so you can all have a look.

Jon - Thanks for finding my $10 gold piece. I was walking my dog over there when he got in a fighjt with the land owners dog. My Yorkie tore his tag off and I kept it. Have the land owner send me my coin and I will send him his dog tag!! ;D HH

Hello!

Now that is really a great find! Congrats!

So did you give it back to the owner? LOL!

Blimey! I'd say a bit posh! Half our dogs running around here don't even have dog tags, most of those are on our servicemen!

Not trying to be picky here, but here are the facts for that particular coin.

1894 TEN DOLLARS OR EAGLE
Mintage:
Circulation strikes: 2,470,735
Proofs: 43
Designer: Christian Gobrecht
Diameter: ?26.8 millimeters
Metal content:
Gold - 90%
Other - 10%
Weight: ?258 grains (?16.7 grams)
Edge: Reeded
Mintmark: None (for Philadelphia, PA) below the eagle on the reverse
1894

In VF-20, it lists for $210, in XF 40 it lists for $225.

Since the coin itself has been turned into a "jewelry" piece, it's value is somewhat diminished to some people, especially coin collectors.

Also, the scratch on the Obverse has a dramatic affect on the coins grading.

The good news is the New York Stock Exchange closed in Friday's trading with gold at $556.50/ounce.

Since the coin is 90% gold and it has a weight of .4839 ounce, that means that it has .43551 ounce of pure gold in it.
This equates to a spot gold value of $242.36, just in the value of the gold in the coin.

Perhaps the jewelry collar device adds another piece of gold, most likely at 14K, (Thus 14 karat is 14/24's gold or 58-1/3 percent gold.), and likely to be
just about 1/30th of the total weight of the coin. So, about another $8.97 to the total gold value of the coin, making it worth
about $251.34 just in gold value. Even though someone may have paid upwards of a couple of hundred dollars to add the bezel, the weight and value of the gold included in that doesn't really amount to that much of a significant increase in the coins overall total gold content and value on the open market.

As I mentioned, not to be too picky here, but I have seen the difference in one grade add up to $1,000's more or less on
many of these coin types.

In this example, a Mint State 60 of the 1894 Ten Dollar Eagle lists for $725, while a Mint State 65 lists for a whopping $11,500!

Hope this helps.

What a beautiful find I must say!

Great to see finds like that on here.

HH and good luck.
Keep up the great posts.
