I swear! This hobby just NEVER ceases
to amaze! LOL

Just a short 2 hour walk at the clad-farm.
Now, this place is just a large park, sports
complex. I would expect the usual cast of
characters, clad, occasional bling, pulltabs, etc.
So, imagine my surprise on this find.

I'm toward the end of my walk, moving toward the
car when I get this beautiful 90 in any direction
and loud! An obvious, near surface hit. But, I'd
gotten a similar signal earlier. Turned out to be
two clad quarters, back to back. So, I wasn't
thinking much about it when I peeled back a very
shallow plug.

Now, I've found some pretty nicely conditioned coins.
But, this!? Well, either this has been lying
just under the grass for 168 years, or, this was
somebody's "lucky coin" and it was dropped recently.

I've done nothing to it but brush it off. You
can decide but as for me? Whether it was a recent
drop or not just doesn't matter. all I know is it's
mine now! :)

It sure stands out from the rest of the day don't it! LOL

Tell you a quick story.

I hit this park which had old deep stuff(7-9 inches) and It had a lot of zincs pennies too. I was working this patch and this zinc penny signal on the surface I hit a dozen times and just walked by it. Finally, I got so frustrated with that in zinc the way, I decided to get it out of there. just IN the grass, right on the surface, was an indian head penny 1906(I think). It looked like it was just dropped yesterday. It had the traditional brown patina(but weathered). No way was that a recent drop. It just happens that way.

Oh my! Yes! I absolutely know that this could just be one of those very rare cases. I, also, have had my share of near surface surprises. One of them was an 1812 half dollar!

I'm just a bit more surprised, suspect of this one. That one I posted in "Best Finds", was an 1831 large cent and it was in near perfect condition. But evidently there for a very long time as it was almost black in color.

Never ceases to amaze.

Never know what is going to pop out of that dirt, nice LC and you didn't have to trip over any cornstalks.

Yep...and that was one of the best things about the day. LOL

Many times re-sodding will yield older coins near the surface. Even a brand new home's lawn can yield old coins depending on where
the loam came from. In my area, a few of the old farms that go back to the 1600's are owned by contractors who deliver & spread loam
around new construction. Once found an 1891 Morgan on the edge of a newly laid walkway that showed "Dollar" one inch down on my old 6000Di. Thought it was a screw top to a glass VeryFine juice bottle. (found many of those). I was happy but not surprised. Nice LC!
Best wishes for many more.

Nice find Whadi. It just goes to show you, that you can find anything, anywhere in this hobby. Well, almost ! At the very least, we can expect the unexpected.

This hobby never ceases to amaze me. Thats a great find in great condition regardless of how it got there. Congrats!

Super nice coin. The 90 signal is kinda weird. I've gotten lucky a couple of times.

Either way it's an awesome find! Congrats!

Dunno how I missed this thread, WHADI..........
That's an amazing find!! Reminds me that if I'm walkin', I should be swingin' that coil.
Congratulations on a wonderful find!!

Awesome find and a nice reminder!

Great LC Whadi! Definitely odd find with the modern clad around. It looks like a non dug LC. Maybe it was a lucky coin? Congrats!!

Very nice find! I've found a number of LCs through the years and you'd be amazed at where they've popped up. If you have old history in your area then that can be about anywhere. In a modern sports park I'd imagine they've moved a lot of dirt around in constructing it, so stuff will be buried very, very deep, and will also be thrown to near the surface. If they brought in fill dirt - then where did the fill come from? All good questions that'll never be answered, bit I'd bet it's not a modern drop. Here in VT I'm convinced every field has at least one old LC in it, especially if it's close to a town. Congrats on a nice find.

Thanks again folks! Yeah....the "how'd it get there" has just become too complex for this feeble brain to figure anymore. LOL

I try to just humbly accept what HE's led me over. But......the variables are just too many!

I know about resodding, seeded hunts, flip coins....etc...etc. My oldest coin I found was basically on the surface in a garden that had just received some new soil. Wish I knew where the soil came from! :)

The 90 signal puzzles me too. Even the air test now rings it up between 87&89. I guess because of the thickness. :dontknow:

A really nice L.C. you have found there, and I am sure not very many have been found right on the surface.I would take that one into a collection any day.

That is super awesome!
Congrats!
That beauty has had some TLC along the way!

I think your "lucky coin" theory is the one. But then He can make anything happen.
....He's probably preping you for the "big" one.

Its always great when you find a coin in better condition than one you have.

Mine is dateless,...in more ways than one.
....now if someone would turn off the snow machine i might have a shot at detecting (ground) before july!

Well done Sir, wrll done!
