Finds started out very slim, but I was quite impressed with how many signals were left to dig considering this place was likely first hunted about 15 years ago.

My first interesting find of the day was this watch key. It was definitely a stray as it does not date to the site, but a cool trinket none the less.

3 early French relics. A glass button, musketball, and ring which is unfortunately missing the stone.

A bit over an hour into the hunt I moved to the center of the field and nailed 5 French Marine buttons in a row.

The thing that was probably the biggest surprise of the day was seeing the original thread and material on one of them! These buttons went in the ground before 1758.

And last but not least I finally got on the board with my first coin of the year.... well first coin there was actually something to see.

WTG IP. Perhaps you can tell me how it is that string can still be on the shank. It's happened to me a few times & I would have thought it would have disintegrated over time. Is the sting is wool or cotton?

Just protected somehow, and even these buttons in much nicer condition have never had it. I'm not sure what it is, but appears to be two different materials. Maybe some type of twine to hold the button on, and whatever the material was for the coat. This would surprise me even from undisturbed ground, but it being a plowed field is pretty wild. I know this field has been one since at least 1935, so a long time the dirt was moved around.

Cotton would be the first choice of material, but possible it's hemp or jute perhaps (rope material) I know they have strength properties, and maybe lasting qualities as well

I have found one here too with cotton or hemp material...same thing a field that's been plowed for generations...pretty crazy how it lasted so long..i'll get a picture up soon

You are such a liar. You're just jealous I found one and went to the craft store to make one to post. I'll fix you because I'm going back to find the entire coat! :occasion14:

See post #21 for your answer, lol.

Your further north than me and we didn't get any of that ! M.R.

See, those are the finds I'm thinking about when I sitting at home not detecting!

Good day!

Check the glass 'button' isn't a 17th C cufflink, although that would be out of place.(can't see reverse & can't check UKDFD as it now needs registering)

what some awesome finds!! wtg!!

yes, I know, and dug a few glass ones before from these sites. Not much difference between late 17th century and early 18th century, so they do fit the site. I certainly would not expect them off a British site here where just getting a William copper is pretty rare.

Did you dig up any croissants or flakey pastries? That thread on the button is as impressive as the coin. Chris

Non, monsieur, j'étais trop préoccupé par mon détection de métaux à se préoccuper de croissants ou pâtisseries flakey.

I'm sure you will!...just looked at mine and you have a lot more thread on yours...have a conservators wax on it... can't take a good pic with my IPAD....
