I realize I posted this before, but I had plain forgotten where I had found it until now. Where I found it might help shed some light on just what this is. I found this on French Point in Lake George NY. French point is a peninsula a few miles from Fort Ticonderoga. It is on this peninsula in 1757 that the French General Montcalm stationed 8,000 of his troops before their attack on Fort William Henry during the Seven Years War. guesses are welcomed
and certainties are fantastic!

There is a flaw in your premise: "I know when it is, but what is it?"

If you don't know what it is you don't know when it was lost. NY has hardly been a sealed site since 1759.

Could be off a farm implement.

It had another kind of V shaped piece to mirror the other one.(now broken off) I think farm or horse related, maybe to help pull a plough.

It's a handle lug from a cooking pot. You can even see the worn spot where the bail rubbed.
