Got home today, looked out my kitchen window and couldn't believe my eyes, my neighbors decided to put in a pool and while they were at it decided to resod their yard so they scraped off all of the grass as well as the top two inches of soil. Well it took me all of about 60 seconds to get over there to ask if I could take a spin through the yard (dirt), they said no problem but I had to split any Gold Dubloons that I found, the odds of that being about a million to one, I quickly agreed :laughing7: The prospect of being able to MD the yard of a home built in 1914 without having to worry about cutting a good plug really had me pumped up. The hunt was great I had my first four silver day, in 2 hours I found 2 Washington Quarters, a Merc, a Rosie and 9 Wheaties. I've been MD'ing for about a year and have found 3 Walkers, a couple of Barber dimes, a number of Mercs and Rosies but no silver quarters which was really beginning to bug me for some reason. At any rate I knocked that fairly commom? coin off of my bucket list so now onto finding that $20 Gold piece!!

the window of opportunity was open and you hit it........well done!!!!

recall back to a similar situation . I was hunting by the Erie canal and there was a crew laying fiber optics. They had just cut a hole 300 yrds with a ditchwitch. They were throwing the last shovel on the truck for the day and pulled away for the day as it was around 3:30. after shooting the taliings I found 3 barber dimes. Timing is everything. nice finds. Rob

I would keep hitting it till the pool goes in. Looks like a nice spot! congrats on the silver

Yes I think that the Umax is a great machine, especially if you are just starting out. It is very simple and straight forward, no display to distract you it really makes you learn the tones of different targets and it is a great coinshooter. I don't think that it can be beat for a detector under $300 and once you learn the machine it will out perform many higher priced units.

Way to go nice silver! When I went to tech school at the Chanute, AFB in 1984, I found a lot of goodies with my MDer on the base.

Hey History Hunter,
I've been wanting to get up there, any recomendations on where to start. I was thinking the parade grounds what do you think? ....Thanks!

You could try that, I use to find silver where they tore down houses by the old officers club. Also the old officers club area was good, I found old air force buckles and rings with the old propeller and wings on them. If the dorm areas area abandon now, hit them. I also went around the hangers and flight line a little and found silver and also a 14K diamond ring. I always wanted to get back there, but you know how that goes. Good luck! P.S. I don't know how the base is now, but if other areas are abandon, like around the old movie theater and post office, go where you can. :icon_thumleft:
