I found this item while fishing in the Shenandoah. Fits perefect in hand. Posted in "What is it?" forum, and someone suggested I post here. Another poster said he thought it was just worked by the river, not by man. I was kind of thinking it was worked by man, then by the river. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Hey Kingsnake, welcome to t-net. I think you're piece may be a natural rock, but keep looking, the Shenandoah river is a good place to find artifacts. Most places in northern V.A. near a source of water will be a good place to hunt. Good luck.

The phrase 'fits perfectly in the hand' automatically tells you it's generally just a rock. Still, I would have picked it up too, just on the basis it's a cool rock. Keep your eyes open Kingsnake, as that should be a good area for village sites.

RGINN, I agree that one can twist and turn any rock to make it fit the hand. However, that shouldn't make any one say it's only a rock. A true artifact, if it was in fact a hand tool, will fall into the hand just like a glove. Experience is the only way to determine artifacts from rocks. I agree, the "it fits my hand" rule of thumb has been given way to much worth. Nonetheless, it can't be ruled out.

Thanks, all. Not the answer I was hoping for, obviously, but there is certainly more experience here than in my short river-rock-picking-up career. Love the way you guys sugar coat it to crush my dreams gently. :laughing9:

So, the headline, "FNG finds NFR" will NOT be appearing in the CNN newsfeed???

Yes its a rock. Anyone could of picked it up and used it to dig a root from the dirt but with out it being altered it is still a rock. It would have to show some use wear or shape difference from natural state to be an artifact and it doesnt show any. That is why it is just a rock. But keep looking and thanks for the post.

Sorry it didn't turn out to be an artifact but you came to the right place to find that out! Good Luck and keep on looking. I'm still trying to find some sort of axe head or similar artifact myself.
