Found a chain that weighed in @ 1.4 ounces (41 grams). It's marked 14k Italy but I think its a fake. I don't have a gold testing kit. It does have weight to it and also its discolored. It still maintains a yellow shine even after cleaning it. My luck its plated :(.

These are best shots I could get with camera phone.

Hope it's real too. Most gold buyers would be able to tell for certain with a quick gold test. And you don't have to sell it to them just because they tested it.

I have seen fake 14K Italy, where the clasp is real, but the chain is not. Only way you'll know for sure is having it tested.

:icon_thumright: hope your luck is good... good find anyhow...

I did just try to see if a magnet would stick to it and it did not. So thats 1 positive. Hopefully I can get it tested next week. Going to padre islands in a few hours.

The quality of workmanship and detail in this chain has the look of quality associated with real gold jewelry - so I'd be 75 per cent hopeful, good luck. Nuggy

It IS real 14K, just made in ITALY.

I found a bracelet with the exact same pattern and mark. It was brass, came out of the ground discolored and shined up nice.

Very cool find Electrocute! 8)

I hope it tests real for you!

Nice find either way . I hate to go against the grain but I think its fake . Where it is marked 14 k there is a well worn spot that is discolored. I hope I am wrong.

get it tested, but be warned, I have seen that exact same 14k Italy stamp on more fakes than real

Sure hope its real!!! :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

Well guy I hope you don't mind here is mine to compare. I think it was a nice looking chain but look at the close pic I have up near the clasp. You can see coopper coming through on mine. Found near one the piers last year out in Newport Beach, CA after I had found bunch of pennies someone had tossed around. Wishing you best of luck.

Hope it's real, looks real! It probably needs a professional cleaning, the added metals like copper and silver to make the gold 14K tarnishes. Congrats and HH, Mike

Electrocute!

I live in TX too.
I bought these solutions from a local jewelry supplier in TX called roseco.
You just by the 10K,14K,18K, and silver test solutions for like $3.00 a piece and a testing stone for about $12.00. All can ship to the house for under $30.00 and it will last several years.

You can scroll down pick the test solutions you want and pay by credit card or Debit! It's as easy as that and then you have control on when you can test - don't have to wait to go to the jeweler!

I had another piece marked 14K and a club member told me to smell it -sure enough it smelled like brass or copper - that's another trick! good luck! and even if its junk - it will make for a great add to the Junk Jewelry collection!! :laughing9:

Was there any resolution to the real/not real question? Best of luck if you haven't heard anything yet!

The fact that it was "discolored" is not a good sign.

Here a "rough" test you can do right now SG. Put your chain in the smallest pill bottle it will fit in, then fill to level full with water, then pull the chain out with a piece of thread or fishing line. Calculate the volume of the chain, you already know the weight, calculate the specific gravity. 14K is 13.55 grams/cc.

If you use the smallest bottle possible, and measure to the closest millimeter you will get a reasonable acurate result, as the SG of copper is only about 9 you will know if it is real or not.
