Hello, to anyone who is knowledgeable about rocks...while raking rocks out of my newly plowed garden, I found two unusual looking stones. There are a plethora of rocks on my property as the ground is very rocky but the rocks are usually jagged and malformed. However; these two stones seemed really unusual. The two stones I found are rounded...similar to a turtle shell, and fairly symmetrical. What I find most curious about them is that both have wihat I would describe as a seam or edge around the perimeter. The larger one is about four inches long and about the width of a mobile phone. The smaller one is about three inches long and two inches wide. Perhaps they are just rocks...but they don't look like any naturally occurring rocks I've seen in this area, so I'm wanting to try and find out if anyone has seen these types of rocks before. I'll post a couple of picks.

Does have a bit of a clam shell look to it, doesn't it?

Could it be a natural occurrence from the erosion of
it being in a riverbed?

Also, welcome to the site..:hello:

Thanks for the warm welcome. I have no idea. There isn't currently a riverbed up here but that doesn't mean there wasn't at one time. We're on pretty high ground but I don't know much about rocks or riverbeds. I will say that it isn't completely smooth like a river rock. It is way more porous and course...yet symmetrically shaped. The pictures don't do these two rocks much justice but they have a well defined edge or seam on them. That being said...I haven't seen any markings to suggest they were carved or shaped by man. They are probably just naturally occurring rocks but it doesn't fit the profile of the countless numbers of rocks that I typically see up here.

Ha...I can neither confirm nor deny. That wasn't my first thought but that is an interesting thought. Thanks for the insight.

My thought is that they are naturally occurring. They look to be porous and something like limestone. From what I can see there is likely a harder layer thru the central ridge and what is above and below is softer material that has erroded away giving them the rounded clam shape. This can occur without water flow and is often seen in out crops that are exposed to wind and rain or even sand.

Doggone DDancer...you were supposed to confirm that these rocks were ancient and valuable native American relics...like a war hammer. I'm just joking...I figured I would eventually find out they were just rocks. I will say that the larger one has what appears to be a rudimentary engraving on it that I keep inspecting with a magnifying glass, but it's probably just my imagination running wild. Thanks for the feedback.
