Looks like it's off of a pistol, perhaps a flintlock. Marks on the guard are probably decorative. Proof marks, when used, were on the barrel. American made firearms of that era didn't have proof marks, they were made one at a time in local gunsmith and blacksmith shops. Looking at the mark, it could possibly be an eclipse of the sun, which would give you a chance to date the gun, because in Kindig's book on Kentucky Long Rifles he mentions a rifle that was decorated with an eclipse, and that dated the gun to the time of the eclipse in the 1700's.

Very probably not military - so no specific pattern needed to be followed. "Make" will be tough as they were pretty much hand made and that engraved design may be the only one the smith made ;ike that. Or the engraver in a shop may have done one operation and the guard was made in England and imported in a box of guards, etc.

Some of the old mid to late 1800's L.C. Smith's had sun carving's on the trigger guard, although most would be bigger than what your showing to accomodate two triggers.
