I could not resist taking a peek at the river. Was passing by it and had no intention of stopping, but I just had to see what the area looked like after TS Issac roared through soaking us for two days. Did not have a lot of time so I just browsed a little. There was not as much erosion as I expected, but plenty of shells and other things on the bank. I did not have time to comb through it all but did find a couple of things during my hurried walk. There seemed to be a lot shoved up on the river bank.

One picture is a celt, it is 4 3/4 inches long and 2 inches at its widest part. It is a nice little piece but it dries nearly white so all the lines and color is gone.
The picture with the ribbing, I have seen it on here before but I do not know if it is a celt
or what. Anyone?

those lines you speak of( the pattern between the grooves) smarty are the grain of the shell.they go all the way through. I really wish you would keep your comments to yourself when you are underexperienced in what your talking about. Happy hunting Harry. Make sure to clean the keyboard when your done.

so gator i am looking at your post #16 with the image you found online showing your idea
i think if those were worn from hafting then it would only make sense that those grooves would continue around the edge to some degree and be very evident
... any one should be able to see what i mean

If you look at the piece in question and not Harry's computer find they do. He did nothing but cunfuse reality here.

Beachcomber....can you post a sideview of your piece For the sake of argument? I wish you guys knew how many of these I have handled. Hundreds Larson. This argument is silly.

The one Harry posted was probably hafted like this.In which case it would leave a single groove like this other one in "MY" hand.

ForumRunner_20120831_083652.png or it was never even hafted yet. Which is likely.

ok gator i know it is for sure an artifact and never had any doubts about that
but i don't buy your groove theory though....to me you are out of gas on that one
you must have a huge amount of shell artifacts, it must take a lot of room to display such large items
you shouldn't call harry names...all i ever read on his posts are a lot of good information
he knows a heck of a lot more than i ever will......but i don't let it bother me
now when you get time go see about getting spell check installed on your computer ...lol

That's funny..I use a cell phone for all of this. Its a pain. LOL. But honestly Larson look how Harry started on this thread. Passive aggressively saying it is just my imagination. Have your opinion. I know the truth. I suppose you just like him regaurdles he is incorrect alot... he just puts alot of spin on it with words that make it seem it MUST be true. Like shining a . . . .It really surprises me how you will subscribe to someone's idea when they have zero field experience concerning the artifact in question if any at all..does not own any of them..has not handled any of them..does not come from where they were made..ect..ect..

Although brash in some of his replies, I am siding with Gator on this one. That pains me as well........:laughing7:.....Shell artifacts are out of my league and I am inclined to listen to a person who has quite a impressive display of them over someone who has never had field experience with them...... no offense Harry................GTP(Chris)

I do apologize.......for the pain. LOL.

I've been reading your replies gator and you are quite knowledged in Florida lithics and tools. I am impressed by your shell celt display above. Do me a favor and show off some of your finer shell artifacts for referencing......................thanks man............GTP(Chris)

You got it. I'm really a nice Guy folks. I'm just passionate about what I do and a bit of a country boy I mean no harm with some of my responses I'm a construction worker and an avocational archaeologist. That might account for my choice of words a bit. Sorry

Hey thanks. You posted the other side..ha ha.. instead of the side but that's cool you can still see the scalloping effect. Some thread huh.LOL.

Real shame its broke. That was a biggun

No offense taken, Chris. But, I am surprised that you think that I don't have "field experience." Is it because 'gatorboy' says so? But, we already know that 'gatorboy' operates at a childlike maturity level and is often unreliable.

I have been collecting in Florida for 36 years . . . fossils, artifacts, and antique bottles. Scuba-diving mostly, but also digging and surface-collecting. But, "field experience" is just half of the challenge; it's easy to collect lots of artifacts and to remain uninformed about them. The other half of the challenge is learning.

So, I don't merely pick up curios and make up stories about them (as does 'gatorboy'). I do the research. When I speak publicly on a subject, you can bet that what I say conforms to some rational idea. When I post images of artifacts such as the shell celts in this thread, you can believe they are images of my artifacts in my collection, unless stated otherwise.

I don't much talk about my credentials; I hoped that my posts on the subject matter here (artifacts) would speak for themselves.

They do....listen to yourself

Gatorboy I am sorry but Harry is very knowledgable and well versed in your area and many others. He has posted many things on here way before you ever posted with your cell phone. The pictures of many examples he has shared are world class and from his extensive personal found collection. I think it is ok to disagree with someone but when you belittle them by calling them uninformed and a mosquito and is easy to knee jerk a response back at the same level. You find and show some interesting artifacts from cultures we do not have. I enjoy reading and seeing what you found. I also appreciate it when Harry stops in and gives experienced informed advice.
The last thing I want to see is people like Harry not coming in here and giving his opinion over something as silly as this. Ok back to the grill lest my venison gets well done, lol.
Happy Hunting
