I found this yesterday at a popular park. Does anyone know how to clean it? Some others found here have ended up coming out pitted, but I'm not sure if this one will. I wanted to clean it and show it at our club meeting tonight. image.jpeg

I like three dots. I have not found any of those.

Sorry, I tried to cancel the post but it had already went through. I finally got the pics loaded now.

Size comparison would be helpful, but is that 1916, or 1918? I think I see the words "God", "States", and "Half". I'm doubting it's silver because never seen silver look that bad. Could be a repro coin.

You found a 1916 Barber half dollar, jimmy. A great find. I cannot tell if there is a mintmark.

That's what I see too, but with that look, I'm wondering about the legitimacy. I think 1915 was the last year of the Barbers. May be a steel reproduction. Someone trying to make for a "unique" coin? Looks way too corrosive to be silver.

First thing I'd try is dropping it in hot peroxide to get the rest of the dirt off, then see how it looks from there. I'd just go short dips with it and keep checking on it. It looks like you have a lot of good detail on the coin. What is the black crud on it?

looks a lot like 1915 to me....

If it is 1915 with no mint mark, would be Philadelphia mint and there was only 138,000 minted. Not to once again be negative, but I've seen the same corrosive effect on 1943 steel pennies. See if it is magnetic or not.

More pics. I used vinegar and tinfoil, then baking soda.

Congrats size comparison would be nice. I just saw the new pics congrats on the barber half

WildwildBill has obviously never pulled a silver coin out of a lake. Take a look at some of the guys pulling silver coins outta the ocean. This coin is not nearly as bad as many.

That is a great find, Jimmy! Grats to ya!!!

HH ALL

It's a half, my friend told me, that's the 4th silver half pulled out of that cleaned out park in the last month or so.

Congratualtions on the nice Barber Half! :occasion14:

From your last picture post after cleaning that coin ,I think you have found a nice coin.

Surprised by all the comments doubting it was a silver coin. It was pretty evident from the start it was silver, but with some less-than-desirable ground effects.

Congrats!

Nice find! I'm glad you were able to clean it. Which of your detectors were you using?

Quite a few threads that show how to use boiling water, aluminum foil and baking soda to clean artifacts.

Congratulations on a very nice coin. Great job on the cleanup. Amazing that so many were found in such a short time.
