hey all,

At that early site that yielded the large cents, the good stuff has been thinning out. I've really pounded the place.

Today I got a good signal on the Vaquero. I thought I'd combed this spot pretty heavily with the ETRAC, which even wasn't finding anything last time, because I'd already pounded it with the Tesoro.

So anyway, I dug down probably 7-8" and got this old copper. 1805 it looks like, but there is something off about the numerals.
Really worn, almost flat, but something was different about it. Oh yeah, the bust faces the wrong way!!! What is this, a British or Canadian LC? Maybe Iron Patch, Bill D.(VA) or one of you other guys would know by looking at it.

I also found a really cool brass relic, will post pics later maybe.

1805 large cent restrike made during the 1860s to satisfy demand for the rare date. Face is so badly damaged i think your thinking its facing left...it was manufactured from discarded mint dies. maybe?

The latest coin at this site was 1818, and all the 1810-18 finds had little wear (dropped when relatively new). Everything else is consistent with an 1820 structure that didn't last beyond about 1830 or 40.

What it might be, though, is a Classic Head with an 1805 overstrike. The shape of the bust is correct for one. I checked it again, the bust is facing left. It's definitely not a Draped Bust facing right.
Another thing I noticed is there are deep scratches that someone put into both sides of the coin, X shaped.

You did get me thinking along a line I never would have, though. I think it is some kind of an overstrike. Thanks for your reply!

Certainly appears to be a "Classic Head " but the 05/over 09 overstrike or restrike theory doesn't show up in "Classic Head" varieties in
the 2013 redbook . Rusted Iron , do you have a source reference for such a variety elsewhere ?

Actually I don't at the moment, and I realize you guys may know a lot more about LC varieties than I do... but here's a theory. As worn as it is, the date still looks to me rather fishy, almost amateurishly faked or struck by some kind of homemade or altered dies. I noticed this almost as soon as I rubbed the dirt away, trying to get some features to be visible for a photo.
EDIT: I took another look at the cent and it is a Classic Head LC. The date looks fake, but I think that's just the way the numbers got mashed and then worn. When I looked at it with a magnifier I saw what looks like an 8 at the end. I'm pretty sure of it. So it's an 1808, maybe just damaged numerals or possibly a worn die.

I will still have a post on the way with all the stuff, and of course relate a brief story or two about the detecting days. I like to have fun with the metal detecting and especially the wild speculation as to what might have happened at the site :-)

Happy hunting, y'all.

nice finds, I can't wait to see the pix and most of all read the stories. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Rusted the mystery copper may be an 1805 Ireland half penny :icon_scratch:

hey all,

Went out detectin' this evening, here is a pic of the combined finds from yesterday and today. Like I said, the nonferrous stuff is really thinning out. I did find a pewter button tonight, but it was far off from the house site and I though it was going to be something modern, so I got kind of careless digging and probably messed up the edges as you can see. Just goes to show, dig everything slowly because you never know when it's going to be something good.

It turned into a cold night and my fingers were freezing. I didn't dress warm enough for this!!

Thanks for looking!

Just in case you didn't know, your attached pic didn't work

Thanks treblehunter. I fixed it. Now you can see all the glorious finds.

I am really happy now each time I find an old fragment of pottery at this site. They seem to be pretty random across the site and I think the plows might have hit it once. I'm thinking a lot of the finds were just a little too deep for the plows, but at some spots they're close to the surface and at some spots they're scattered like they were pushed out from the home site. This spot was definitely worked for agriculture in the past 100 years.
