Found this point in cave

Hello. Looking for any helpful info. Found lots of chert chips and some stone tools up on a huge rock in a cave on some family lands. Explored area and caves for past 10+ years. Never noticed this cave. The big rock is a workbench for making points it seems. Only place on property we’ve ever found this material. Anyhow. The point is broke. Tip is gone and base too. Trying to figure out how old it could be. I cleaned it up it was just laying in some rock dust dirt In cave. Barely started looking in dirt found this point. First one I’ve ever found. It has bands of different colors. Very beautiful ! Broke or not. Elliott / Morgan County.

Thanks for any help in figuring out info. Age of when it possibly was crafted.

Took some videos of the cave and rock table. Can’t upload those it seems. Here some of the chert stones we picked up. I didn’t take anything upon initially finding it. Didn’t want to mess up the site.

Couple more pics. Not sure if this is Petroglyph or not? Looks old I couldn’t make anything like it with tools I had. In back wall of our largest caved waterfall. Have to take a light in there and see if there’s anymore.

If you're finding all of this flint debitage on or just under the surface, it's a good bet the site has already been disturbed by previous digging. Most undisturbed, inhibited rock shelter artifacts are buried under a few inches of eroded sandstone. Exceptions would be the drip line or a recent flow of water that runs through the shelter (water flow that didn't exist during occupation).

The material looks like Carter Cave or Palio chert which is very common in Eastern and Central Ky. This type of material was a favorite during the Archaic era and most artifacts that I've found that utilized this material are in fact Archaic. Obviously, there are exceptions to that as well. As mentioned earlier, it is difficult to ID the point that you found, it resembles a knife form. It seems to have cortex on the bottom which all but rules it out from being a true arrowhead.

What's interesting about the point is that it is worked "against the grain". Nearly every artifact that I've found using this material was made with the bands running exactly opposite. That doesn't mean that it was harder to manufacture by going against the grain, it's just an example of utilizing what was available or using a strategic approach in the napping process based on how the maker thought the result would turn out. Nice piece for sure.

Is this "carving" raised or reccessed?

Good point and thanks for correcting my info. Yes it is almost raised actually. I just thought over time it crusted up or something. I will double check when I get back to that area next. But I believe it is sorta raised as opposed to grooved into

Hey neighbor, just re visited this original post I did back in the winter...moved my posts over to the Native American artifacts section, way more traffic and activity when posting there. Also glad someone else around here goes out and finds the old stuff...had a pretty good summer of artifact hunting...think I’ll be doing this till I can’t do it anymore. What county you in Crumb? Have any luck out there hunting?
