The area I was magnet fishing used to have a railroad back in 1920-1930 but is no longer there. I thought this may be a mallet head because of the rectangle section missing in the center that appeared to be where the handle attached, however now that it is completely dry the entire thing looks that way. The fiber like pattern is an indicator of wrought iron so I am assuming this may be pretty old.
