baking soda paste and rub it with your fingers

quick bath in half water half muriatiic acid.
Then soak in fresh water overnight.
Its easy and is done by the entire Fisher crew and most other wreck divers..they even follow that up by putting them in a tumbler.
Electrolysis would have been used to remove silver oxide crust if it were present..which its not.

Sometimes they come out looking like this..then electrolysis is the first step.

No problem ..I bet your stoked!

It is a 4R Potosi. Your second photo's orientation needs to be rotated 90 degrees counter-clockwise. GatorBoy has advised you on cleaning. My preference is electrolysis. It needs to be cleaned to ascertain further details. I think you should have a discernible date along with mint and assayer.

Yep-it has turned my fishing trip into a digging trip-haha!

I bet you will be even more excited when you see the date on a Potossi minted coin.. and Potossi itself!
Can you image an entire mountain made of silver?!
Diverdown knows his stuff.

That would be a dream find for me. The wheats, silvers, ect are fun in all but the treasures to me are the OLD relics..anything like this ....civil war era and earlier.

Here it is cleaned up-we think its a 1700's?

Like the AT PRO in the background it's nice to see a picture of a cool find with the metal detector I use

It is when I see it too.
Happy hunting my friend.

GB question? Last year found a1/2 or 1Reale in the water and it looked like the bk crusted one in your pic-this coin was found on beach down 8-10 inches and was crusted wht with shells and coral on one side-any thoughts about the difference? Thanks!

It differs depending on where it spent most of its time.
I call those "cookie" coins with the crust on both sides and silver in the middle. Sometimes that crust can preserve detail..as long as its removed correctly.
The best thing to do with those is to remove only a small amount of the crust from the edge after using the same 50/50 water acid mix to soften it.
Only remove enough to connect a small alligator clip.."stainless steel" as part of the electrolysis set up and that crust will fall away.
Then proceed with the same steps as above.

We did the 50/50 for a couple of days an added an exacto knife to chip away the crust (no Im not a redneck from GA but I am a hillbilly from SC) and will not do that again-Im going to hunt the treasure Coast in July-any thoughts there?
