I went to detecting after work today and found this thing at about 4 inches deep. It was covered in dirt but you could tell it was a square box but it only about an inch thick. Its about 3 1/2" x 3 1/2". You can see in the first picture that there is a place where the top of it comes off.(Maybe) If anyone knows what it is please let me know. You can see at the top left of the box where it looks like it opens. Thanks Maverick29(Chris)

Kinda looks like it could use a little electrolysis as well.

Thanks seger. While I was cleaning it I heard something in it when i shake it. Sounds like small bits of stuff. It does weight alot more then tin. It feels like iron. Thanks for the guess though ;D

Got a battery charger? You have electrolysis.

Bowl of water with some salt and a few squirts of lemon juice, hook one clip to a stainless steel spoon, the other to metal on the object, and let er go.

Pretty simple.

I can't remember which thing gets hooked to what lead. Just make sure the spoon is stainless, the battery charger clips are not in the water for either one (I use a small clip lead from Radio Shack to attach both), and that the iron object bubbles.

Those are mostly late 1800's and early 1900's, I believe.

Just make sure when you "Electrolize" that the object is the one that is bubbling.. I did a axe head the other day by using nothing less than "Oxyclean"! worked great..
I believe that the negative is attached to the object to be cleaned.

If its a hollow tin, you might have a hard time keeping it from floating. Why dont you just try to knock off some of the heavy rust and post another pic. (smaller so it will fit our screens). Also pry open the lid and see what goodies might be inside first. It may be a large relay.

Thanks guys for the info.
The box is heavy so it shouldnt float so that parts taken care of. Will Try to open it later this week and see exactly what it is unless I can clean it up to tell. Thanks again and hh
