Found this at a garage sale. Know it’s a European hanger, or briquet.thats all I know, paid four bucks for it; hoping it was a deal. Can anyone tell me anything about it? It is marked on a he hilt and the top of the blade, hoping u can see it in these pics. Any more info would be greatly appreciated, including any idea of value.

No clue. When did we do away with swords? Can't go wrong for four bucks.

My wife would love that thing at times.Congrats

Looks like an early French sword

Four dollars well spent, congratulations! :occasion14:

Thanks for the likes, good to be back on TN. Been lacking a phone to post my metal detector finds, thought this was worth borrowing the wife’s phone to show the sword. Anyone have an idea how I can find what the marks mean? Is there a free site where I can look them up?

Congrats on your 4 dollar purchase. No help from here on the id but I'm sure someone will chime in.

It does look like a french briquet

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabre_briquet

Or a prussian M1817/ 1869

Or any replica thereof. I cant see the marks yet since they bear a crown, french is unlikley since France was in the 19th century mostly a republic or an Empire.

Does it have any markings on the blade (a good sword should). Is there chrome or nickel peeling of the blade? Than it is a latter period replica/ceremonial sword.

Greets Namxat

Who thinks that this is a very good buy for 4 dollars

Thought I would post better photos of the hallmarks. Nothing peeling on blade.marks on hilt, top of blade, and side of blade, here they are magnified. Can’t seem to find anything online, need a sword expert in cherry valley, lol😁

I believe S&K is the manufacture

Hey thanks for your input, me thinks the s&k is a German manufacturer. Really just trying to get an idea, so when I put it on eBay I have some clue. Cool sword, but I don’t really have a use for it, I only bought it cause I like the leather sheath and how could I not for four bucks.

sweet find thats cool

European Infantry Hanger

The European Infantry Hanger was used by various countries including France, Germany, Russia, Spain and others - including Mexico - from about 1800 to about 1900. Many variants are available as a result, including fullered and unfullered blades.
The French call this a briquet. On French swords, the ricasso is generally stamped with the mark of the Director, the Controller and the Reviser of the arsenal; this is especially true with swords manufactured at the Klingenthal arsenal in France. On trooper swords these marks are found on the guard as well.
The most commonly encountered are the French Model 1816, the Spanish Model 1816 or 1818, and the Russian Pattern 1817.

French pattern with German markings.
Crown FW is a "proof" mark
'D' (Gothic) under crown = on German Contract Frommer Stop mfg in 1916
40 is the year of manufacture, 1840
S&K maker- Schnitzler and Kirschbaum of Solingen, Germany

Any photos of the scabbard? Any markings on it?
