I found a Steam and Sail ship in the Red Sea and can't find any history about it. The name was found on the stern and the shipping line was found on some plates and saucers (Portuguese). It appears that the ship caught fire and they ran it onto a reef before it sank for good reason. The surrounding water is hundreds if not thousands of feet deep.I have searched for hours on the net and have found some vague history of two other ships that resemble it's time frame but with the wrong name and another that gives the general area of a similar ship but no name or shipping line.I looked up the shipping line on Ships List but it did not list the name of the ship we found but did list one with the about the same age as lost in Red Sea. It appears that maybe it served two purposes, moving cargo and people. It had some rather fancy dinner ware for just a cargo ship but I have a lot to learn yet.Any suggestions for finding more out would be appreciated.

Sometimes shipping lines would sell their vessels to other lines, then renamed, only to be sunk a short time later (for a myriad of reasons). Being renamed doesn't mean the plates were changed. You may be looking in the wrong shipping line if she was sold. Have you found any mention of her at all or regular routes she took? From your description, my guess is that she was a passenger liner, not simply a freighter. Check the names of vessels within the shipping line mentioned on the plates and see if any of them were sold.

Best to you,
Darren

"Lloyd's List" gives information about the movements of ships engaged in the foreign trade. The earliest surviving issues date from 1741; a complete run is available from 1779. It has been published daily, excluding Sundays, since 1 July 1837 and gives arrivals and sailings, port by port, and CASUALTY REPORTS.
