Well, this find is not an old coin, or old artifact, but found the following fossil and I have no idea what it is, it seems to be the imprint of a biological fossil.

Anyways, I had been driving on Friday for a few hours just sightseeing, and taking pictures of good old Wyoming. Went off the main roads just for the sense of adventure. Anyways, I had to stop in the middle of nowhere because i needed to relieve myself, and since I had not seen any signs of towns or rest stops for several miles, I just stopped off an old dirt road, and went into an open field close to some low lying mountains. Had to walk a good ways to get out of sight from the dirt road.

I did my business, but then not too far off I saw an outcropping of rocks which looked old. I got closer to check them out, since i also like to collect rocks, and the first thing that caught my eye was the following stone with the imprint of a fossil, and it still has some petrified leftovers of whatever left the imprint in the stone.

I looked for a good hour around the area trying to see if i could find anything else, or any of the remnants of the fossil which left the imprint but had no luck.

I am not sure exactly as to what left that imprint. I have been doing some research over the weekend just trying to figure out what it is, and found nothing even similar to it.

Tomorrow, or on Tuesday i will be going to the local museum and find out what it is.

Couldn't post the image before but just added it.

interesting........how big is it?

that is nice, please let us know what it is.

Fossilized keyhole limpet shell? I don't think they are that circular, though, unless the earliest ones might have been??

It looks like the cast remnants of a fish or mammal vertebrate... my best guess...

a mid backbone piece --- your looking at the "end" of it where it joins up to another piece in the backbone. ----some type of fish is my guess----Ivan

It is almost 2" in diameter, and it doesn't look like those pictures you gave Beechfork. It could be a jellyfish, but I have never seen one with so many concentric rings.

There are some remains of the fossil which left the imprint in the stone, but when I found the stone the fossilized remains was facing upwards. My guess is that over the centuries the fossilized remains was destroyed by the elements.

49er there were no signs whatsoever, no fences or anything which would tell me what sort of land it was. It was not too far off from the dirt road, or even the main road. The dirt road looked like it was modern, and it had sings of frequent use. Although when I stopped there was noone around and not trucks/cars passed at any time that I was there.

Jeebus... after reading that link that you gave me 49er i don't think I will be going to the museum with that thing... I'll probably put it right where i found it..

I understand the need to protect a historical site and such, but getting thrown in jail, or even possibly paying a fine for picking up a 2 inch fossil without trespassing any place, and in a site which had no signs of any kind?....... that's a bit too much imo...
