Found some sort of chamber in the woods

So I was exploring an area where there apparently used to be a covered bridge. Lo and behold, I stumbled upon this site. The odd thing is that there is a concrete slab atop it while the bricks are clearly made of clay. It seems as if someone had tried to cover this opening at some point. Anyone have an idea what it might have been? I'm thinking an old cellar or underground chamber of some sort. Thanks!

We have those in New England. Some people think they were native American, but the more traditional explanation is food storage / root cellar as someone had already mentioned. Though ours have flat fieldstone walls and a large flat rock slab on top. Some fringe folks think they were built by Vikings, celts or others who they believe visited the us in ancient times. Might be worth checking in with your local historical societies ( after you md the sure of course!!).

Perhaps -- that's what I thought at first. Looking closely though, they seemed to be gray clay bricks, though I am not the best judge of these things. I think I'll video tape my next trip out there so that I can give a better view.

To answer some of the other posts: The concrete seems to be unrelated to the original structure as if someone sealed the hole off at a later date. As for the bridge remains, there were none that explicitly screamed bridge. However, I found another chamber/foundation of sorts that had some pipes in it. I'll upload pics of that too once I have access to my camera again. Thanks for the posts so far!

I see these all over my area. They are made at the mouth of a spring, and almost always lined with masonary. Is the structure in a creekbed or a hollow or ravine?

Dolmens are neolithic tombs or monuments consisting of a large stone laid across upright stones.Stockpicker is right.Though they arent native american(native americans didnt build in stone) and some that have been found are far to small to have been used for food storage.The celts were most definitely here as the very same structures have been found overseas.While im at it i'll also add that the phoenicians,the romans,the knights templar,and of course the vikings were also here.Look around you might find an opening to an underground entrance way.Also look around as you might find a softball or bigger size piece of quartz carved into the shape of a diamond.The celts also built Dolmens and then covered them with earth,making an underground chamber.If this peaked your curiosity,google Druid hill in lowell massachusetts and mystery hill in new hampshire.

There is a bit of flat land, another concrete structure 100 or so yards away, and then an incredibly steep incline.

If your structure here does turn out to be a dolmen,there will be others,either close by or up to miles away perfectly aligned with this one.From your close up picture those are not bricks,ive seen many pictures of dolmens and the rocks(bricks) look exactly the same as this,except for the concrete slab.Maybe it was never finished,or maybe the cement is really mortar(the romans used mortar in their structures).In about a 50 mile radius of where i live there is up to 15 structures built by the celts.In groton connecticut there is one area called gungywamp,in gaelic gungywamp means church of the people.Need more proof the celts were here.In 1900 a bronze age celtic dagger was found in an indian shell mound at merrimac port near amesbury massachusetts.Roman olive oil lamps were also recovered from indian shell mounds in clinton connecticut.British archaeologists inspected them and concluded they were late roman designed around 700 to 800 BC.
