Today we went back to the two old houses we've been searching when the weather is good and that yard is full of signals.I dug what appears to be the back of an engraved brass pocket watch. It looks like the top letters read Something Road and Timekeeper as well as the word hands near the hole.there are also other words further down. How can I bring out some of the detail? The other thing my mister dug and it looks like the lid to something.

It looks like it says Railroad Timekeeper. That is a really cool find.

And Liverpool at the bottom

Yes that does look like Liverpool, good eye Ahab.Off to Google now.

Coll keep us posted. That could have some very interesting history. Just picturing the conductor checking his pocket watch. Time was everything to the train system!

Rail road timekeeper "hands" are where the hands were set. "Name of maker or owner" Liverpool Ireland

Made by M.J. Tobias "thats the name in script" made from 1850 - 1890 looks like a early one too... the other piece is the silver case it came
in...

Yes BHG M.J. Tobias was the maker apparently,I can see that clearly now.Not really sure what it's made of but you can tell its old. Will try and go back maybe Thursday to hopefully find the rest! Ahab my great grandfather was a railroad man which makes this find even more fun.

I would say its made of brass... beautiful find :-)

Thank you BHG. I swear next time we go I'm gonna wear a miner's hat,we always seem to go so late in the day.

Cool find CoilyGirl! One of my parents closests friends was a train conductor when I was growing up.
He would always blow the horn for us kids!
Kinda funny, how as kids, we had no fear of trains or the train yards! LOL!
Would maybe some babyoil, olive oil, or suntan oil, clean it up without damaging it?

Yeah those train yards can be quite alluring for a kid! I just so happen to have some olive oil handy, maybe I'll try and lightly shine it with some.My husband will often swipe his finger on the bridge of his nose and get some natural oil from his skin while we are in the field to bring out detail .

Nice piece of history! Get one of those little LED head lamps on elastic head band, works great. Congrats on getting out! GL & HH!
