Went out in the woods today, and a couple ridges over from where I deer hunt,I found this rock overhang, which looked like it was used for shelter a long time ago. Theres enough room to sleep 4 (LOL). Only enough room to crawl ,not stand. Inside floor had about 4 inches of loose soil, more nut shells than soil (weird) , and some rocks. I crawl inside with my detector, and found 4 shotgun shell heads.
2-Federal Monark No.12 (single ring around primer)
1-Remington UMC New Club No.12 (eight point star around primer)
1- UMC Co. Nitro Club No.12 (single ring around primer)

I believe they are all early 1900's, not sure. Chime in if anyone knows this stuff:BangHead:
Thanks in advance, Ron ...

Might go back tomorrow and get more,my back started getting tight and had to quit today.

Wow, these types of finds are always intriguing. My guess is this could certainly have been used as an emergency shelter by natives or frontiersmen that may have been caught out in a storm. It could also have been used to store dry goods if there where any camps in the immediate area, other then that the low ceiling really limits its use to varmints or bear as the nut shells would indicate. Keep us posted, thanks for sharing and great pictures!

Also, Wheelers Raid came through this area also. Google , "Wheelers Raid" if your interested.

Good luck with your room. And it is fun to explore those areas. I don't know if you'd be interested but below is a thread link I started in Spring of this year. I'm not very far from you either. I still have some exploring to do and then I'm going to make a couple sifters and start in looking for artifacts also. And that's where I left off this summer. My cave is a little larger than your room but I believe any artifact's will be found around entrance both inside and out. I hope you have fun guy.... Brad

I have found some really great arrowheads in overhangs like that. I'd look some more in there!

Mr. OverKill... All jokes aside I'll be happy to take ya back there and show you anytime. Sometime you just wanna get away drive on over. Bring the MD along and we'll do some MDing on an old road behind my home. I live in the Centerville area. I think TNguns is close to ya also.... drag him along if he wants.... We can do a little MDing and caving then tip a couple and play some pool right here. PM me if ever interested... later, Brad

Brad,
Was just joking,I'll be happy to do a hunt. TNGuns and I was supposed get together a couple weeks ago,but had something come up and had to back out.
Thanks man,

Yea I see you and Mr. Guns were close to each other... anyway if you guys ever just want to get away sometime come on over. I have a spare bedroom and bath. Good luck with your overhand on finding some artifacts. Mine is just so hard to get to.... but I'm gonna finish it.

They may have been tossed in there, lost when someone made a shelter or even carried in by animals. Sounds like an animal was eating nuts in there as well.

They were smart animals back then. Glad they didn't get the modern shotshells made of plastic. Yea,something definatly liked to eat the nuts in there, many years worth covering the bottom, lol

Mice and squirrels brought the nut/shells in.... but shotgun ends... ???? maybe, but why waste the time for what? Hell what do I know.... I'm still trying to figure out my cave's etched mounds.

Hope you find some artifacts under here. When I see a spot like that, I plan to light it up with my UV light and see if the dirt has been disturbed in the past. Might be something hidden that your detector won't find, but if you see signs of disturbance, you might want to dig and sift that spot.
