I found a family scrapbook with some news articles, one with Mac mason, and a few interesting perspectives on detecting way back in the day. Just some fun, brief reading . . . First is an article about Sam McClaren, a well-known MDer and artillery de-fuzer. He also taught history at a local high school. he lost 3 fingers, took a frag in the stomach and it's a miracle he survived!
The next few are from an editorial written by a MDer in 1960. One sentence here . . . can you even begin to imagine? And I knew the guy who wrote this. Not exaggeration . . .
This next is prophecy isn't it?? he sure hit THIS on the head. he was referring to the many repros being made for the civil war centennial 1960-1965 . . .
And a word about rare Confederate buttons that makes me sick to read it today . . .
Lastly, I love this pic of members of the Virginia Arms Collectors in 1962. The Virginia Historical Society asked the club to clean the Confederate weapons in its Maryland Steuart Collection and they jumped at the chance to handle these priceless pieces. I highly doubt a museum would let a bunch of "gun nuts" (!!) get hold of anything like this today. Cracks me up that at least two are SMOKING while they work. Today? Eh . . . not so much! This picture was taken in the basement of Richmond's Battle Abbey and pictured clockwise starting at bottom left: Melvin Gaulding, Mac Mason, Leonard(?) Hobgood, N. E. Warinner, J. M. Johnson, John Gilmer, Bob Howard and Tom Smith. Old-timers like me will remember some of these names!
