Maybe it's a Belay Pin from a schooner

Maybe a sounding bar. They would throw it in the water in front of the ship then measure how much line ran out when it was along side (mid beam), the sounder would then call the depth out to the helmsman. The sounding term "Mark Twain" meant two fathoms of water or twelve feet.
