Found my second GOLD coin today! But not how you'd expect...

Last Saturday it was raining pretty hard here in southern Vermont so rather than going detecting, I decided to go to the bank. It's been a long time since I've done a good coin roll hunt so I figured I'd try my luck. They only had $50 in halves, which turned out to be skunks. I decided to buy a box of nickels. Now, I almost always find foreign coins in any denomination when going through boxes, but never like the one I found Saturday. About 15 rolls into the box I hadn't found any keepers until I noticed an gold/brass color. It was the same diameter as the nickels but had raised print along its rim. I figured it was going to be a modern brass foreign coin or token. When I pulled it from the roll I was pretty shocked to see 1878 20 francs. I flipped it over and saw the Angel. Foreign gold coins are not my specialty, so l had to look it up. Turns out it's 90% gold with a total of .1867 Troy ounces of pure gold. Not a bad return on investment for a nickel. The coin is polished and scratched, so it's probably only worth it's melt value, but gold is gold :).

What the?? That's a crazy find, congrats!

That is way COOL! GOLD!!!

That is one incredible find.
I believe gold closed around 1220.00 today.
That's one heck of a return on your investment.

Congrats.

Talk about luck! Just think of the sap that put that in a roll of nickels or coin machine... what were they thinking!? :dontknow:

I know I don,t chime in here very often but .This is the treasurenet forum and you where searching for treasure and you were successful with your approach and follow through. CONGRATULATIONS This deserves BANNER AS MUCH AS ANY OTHER GOLD COIN. My vote is in and if your coin doesn't make it you will have the distinction of being the finder of the only gold coin on treasure not to make the banner!!!(not sure that is true but it sure seems like it is) Great job Goldbill

I love French gold, sovereigns, etc. To find one CHR is a very, very rare thing. I'll go banner too.

Wow! That really out does the law of averages! And machine rolled!
You are one of the luckiest men alive!
Awesome find congrats!

Sorry bout that .I figured there had to be a couple out there ,but none the less I"m thinking this has to be the only gold coin found in a roll of nickels while coin roll hunting. What do you think??? Goldbill

yea you got me there, that is crazy to find gold in a roll, but ppl do the same with silver so ,theoretically there are folks out there that look at a piece of gold and say "yea this is worthless"

Thank you everyone for your comments. I'm surprised gold coins don't turn up more often. Coin roll hunters find all kinds of obscure coins in rolls. I have an impressive collection of foreign coins collected from rolls and coin machine reject trays.

Maybe I should add that to my winter hunting, coin roll hunting! The only things I have found at the reject tray are keys, washers, pins, etc. nothing of value, yet.

I'd say it was time to do a happy dance for that one.

Consider this to be another banner nomination.
