Found My First "STANDING LIBERTY" "L" and the Olvie Branch! For Sure! Type 2

Well I found my found my first Standing Liberty quarter dollar today. It's worn, but I dont care! The Silver U-Max seem to be doing pretty well. I paid a visit where the settelers used to live I believe! Anyway, I could not believe it! Can any one help with the date, I think its the first series from 1900? Because of the breast? :whip2: Anyway Neet find! Peace! the Kid in Idaho! Marvin. After further review of this coin, I say it is a 1916 because of the split hair on the front, and on the back it is clear the allignment of the eagle, and the way it is positioned the 3 stars would not have been their. Even as worn as it is....if you look closely the the space between the eagle and where it reads "quarter dollar," their no room for stars! Awesome.

The Olvie Branch on the 1916 overlaps the "L" on this coin. The Type 2 1917 does not! Any Questions? Im taking this one in. After using a powerful optics this is 99% a 1916.

Re: BEEP! BEEP! Found My First "STANDING LIBERTY" More Photos! It's a 1916!

My considered opinion is a 1917 Type 1. The hair flip is probably too worn to make a positive assumption by just looking at a picture it would probably be neccesary to see the actual coin in person to make that judgment. However there are a couple of telling secondary areas to look at. The drapery by Lady Liberty's foot the 1917 has a more difined drape of the gown with a clear gap between it and the foot which seems to be the case in your coin. The next is in the dots of the shield, the 1916 version the dots were not defined well at all and the 1917 dots were much more strongly pronounced which is obvious in your picture.

There was an excellent article in the April-June issue of the Ohio Metal Detecting magazine. You can get a copy by ordering it at: http://www.ohiometaldetecting.com/magazine.html

Nice Job my friend. Here's a recent 1917 Type 2 I found. You cans see the stars below the Eagle compared to your Type 1 with no stars. Aside from those with special mintmarks, the 1917 Type 1 and Type 2 are very comparable in value.
That is a beauty, Sentinel! You're certain it was found in the ground?!?!? Looks slightly worn on breast and face, but probably XF-40-high AU. WOW!

Absolutely was found in the ground. You can still see some of the dirt/patina on the reverse it if you look closely  :icon_thumleft: Here's the pics before Cleaning:

I wasn't doubting you. I was complimenting your find. After cleaning it is one of the better 1917's I've seen.

I agree also. The close-up shows an interesting doppler effect. Liberty's body and hair appear to be recessed into the coin, where they actually are raised. However, there is no split pony-tail visible, and it must therefore be considered a 1917. This is logical as well, as the 1917 was far more common in terms of mintage numbers.

Still, it never hurts to be sure.

It looks like a 1917 to me as well. >:( I know it can be hard sometimes to be critical of your own find when you think it might be a really good one!! :) The one way to know for sure, send it off to ANACS with $30 and see what they say. If you feel very confident, that is *is* 1916, I'd love to see the results from ANACS, plus then you have it authenticated and encapsulated to protect it. Either way, a silver quarter is a nice find anyday. :icon_thumright:

Here is a couple pictures of my 1917 Type 1, discussing this coin and it's identification was I believe one of the motivations for Nicks article in Ohio Metal Detecting Magazine

I didn't think you were. I was surprised at how beautiful it was myself and it made it that much better when I saw it was a 1917. :occasion14:

Here's a TYPE I

I found this 1917 Type I a few years ago. I took new pictures today and it's "growing" a new patina. It was about 8 inches deep in the grass strip between the sidewalk and the curb. I found a real nice 1926 close by too.
